Current progress on my Montreal Dorval 1960 scenery. I'm still looking for a few volunteers to help with some of the details.

Did this in about an hour. Hope it helps: Not sure how close it is to the real 1961 plate, but it's a merge of the modern overhead of the current terminal combined with the 1956 chart available from JWH's site. I scaled them with the scale on the bottom of each to make sure they were the same size. The "new" terminal opened up on 30 December 1960. The old one was where the beacon star in the circle is at. I'm guessing the beacon was moved to the top of the new terminal in 1960. The old terminal was around until they expanded the 1960 terminal, but I'm not sure when that happened. The hangars on the left side are just being torn down this year to expand the north-western peir, so they're really old! Just a hint for working with Sketchup: Make sure you select the faces and flip them so that they are white instead of gray. Also, make sure that you make different layers for different things such as main building, tower, hangars, etc. After you make your items make sure you make them into groups instead of components. For some reason MCX doesn't like the whole component thing, but groups are okay. Again, hope this helps. Jorge

Jorge:
Thanks for the tips. I found a great collection of aerial shots for Dorval in 1961. The "new" terminal and old terminal are still present and both show active parking spots. The area south west from the old terminal, running along the old hangars shows military transport aircraft. By 1961 06R was open, something not depicted on the 1955 plates.
Since I will be making the old terminal anyway, I will probably release a 1955 version of Dorval as well.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this whole texture thing.

I have to make mention of a disappeared airport - close to Dorval airport, Canadair had its base at Cartierville. The two airports were so close to one another and had such similar lay-outs (both having runways 06/24 & 10/28), that... well, you can guess the rest! It happened at least twice, both instances in 1960: the first time, a BOAC Britannia made a "wrong landing" at the Canadair base - not on Cartierville's runway 28 (8800 ft), but on its runway 24 (4000 ft!). Luckily, the pilot put her down in one piece, despite having to cope not only with the short runway, but also with a fuel truck whose driver had stalled it on the middle of the 06-side of the runway when he had seen the Britannia barrelling straight at him (and subsequently had to be hauled out of his cabin in a state of shock). The captain made one more flight for BOAC (Cartierville - Dorval), before flying back to the UK as a passenger... The second time (July 27 1960), it was a Pan Am 707-driver that got caught out, luckily for him runway 28 was in use with no fuel trucks at the end of the runway, so he sheepishly taxied his 707 to the apron after realising his mistake... Here are two pictures which show Cartierville in 1959 and 1961 respectively: winnipegacc.org/pages/index9_cv/cv1959.jpgwinnipegacc.org/pages/index9_cv/cv1961.jpgAnd here's one that shows the airport in 1973, with Dorval's runway 6L/24R visible in the background: winnipegacc.org/pages/index9_cv/ycv_1973.jpg

Looking good! Thanks very much for tackling a Canadian airport. I'm a big fan of the great white north, and sadly we are a quite short of "Classic" airports in Canada.

Hello!!! This being my city of birth, and from where I took my first flights (even if they were in 707s and DC-9s ) as a kid in the early 70s - means I'm very stoked. Looking forward to this immensely. If you need a tester for the FSX platform, I'll be happy to help. Best regards,
