I changed the mortar color to more closely resemble the brick color, then I blurred the whole texture pretty good. It doesn't look as good up close, but it looks a lot better from a distance.

Well, I have the terminal done... at least until I decide to change some things or find some new pictures. I need to modify a few textures to make them FS compatible, but that won't take long. Before I move on to the next buildings, I think I will try to place the model into FS and see how it looks. I have the AFCAD itself mostly done; just a few things like landing lights and stuff left on it.

Well, after a ridiculous amount of trial and error, I finally got the terminal into FS. I need to redo a few textures as they look terrible in the simulator. However, frame rates appear to be fairly good at the moment, granted there is nothing else around. As Christmas winds down and passes I will have more time to working on this instead of being at my store until midnight four days a week.

I discovered a new texture issue last night and I can't figure it out. When I have a plane near the terminal building, everything is textured as it should be (FS9 running at maxed out settings for a 4:3 monitor). However, as I fly away and turn back to have the terminal in sight, even with the default 172, the textures pretty much disappear for the terminal and blur for everything else. I tried dropping the resolution down to 1024x768. The textures were fine for the 172, but went out again when I switched to the 1049G. Is it possible that I am asking too much of the computer, i.e. the textures require too much power to render properly and they simply blur out instead? Most of the textures are fairly simple and hand-drawn by myself. I'll keep playing around, but any suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Attachments:

Are the ground textures blurred too, or only the terminal? If the latter, it's usually due to you texturing both small and large objects with the same texture. This confuses FS and it chooses the wrong mipmap (FS creates its own if your texture doesn't include them). Try using MDL Tweaker II to fix this:
1. Load the MDL file into ModelTweaker II. 2. Click the button on the right with the T on it (textures). 3. Click the Check Texture Sizes button. Click the Update Texture button. 4. As you click on each texture in the listing, check the Texture Size box and make sure the night textures (if any) match the day texture. If not, change them to match the day texture value. 5. Click the Update Texture button after each manual change in Step 4, and before you close this window. 6. Save the MDL file - it will suggest a name with tweaked after it; I just save it as the original name, overwriting the original MDL file. 7. Now try that in FS.
Hope this helps,

I haven't had too much time to play with the texture issue, so I decided to keep modeling for now. I moved onto the original terminal. This building, which is still standing, is far simpler to model than the new terminal. The modeling phase is nearly done and I am doing textures now. Here is a quick screen shot from inside SketchUp. Here is the latest picture of the original terminal. Looking at some old photographs, the lower part of the tower was just the columns; there were no windows or doors as there are now. I don't know when this change took place, but I am going to go with the older configuration unless I find evidence to show that I should change it. I'm not sure that I have a 100% accurate brick-to-brick representation of the sides, but the pictures I have to work with show pretty much every brick, and I am trying to get at least the overall look of each side. It has been fairly time-consuming making sure that mortar lines are right and so on. However, I think the effort is worth it. Attachment Deleted

Still working on the old terminal's textures. The details the original builders put in does not lend itself to making quick work of texturing. However, I am still making progress. Here is the latest (you can see this side from Google Maps street view). Update: I realized that I missed a few things on the new texture and have since changed them. The current picture represents the changes. Attachments:

After correcting some AFCAD/BGL issues with FS9 and Windows 7, I have managed to place the old terminal into the simulator. I have a few pics to show it. After getting these fixes done, I will be able to get back to actual scenery work, so hopefully, things progress a little faster than the previous few weeks.

Hi,
Nice! If you want to take a picture of the building without your plane in the way go to 2D cockpit view, press W until you get only an outside view, and then slew to view the building.
Hope this helps,

Tom,
I'd thought about doing that, but I wanted to put the DC-7 in there. I have a picture courtesy of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority with a Delta DC-7 on display between gates B4 and B6 of the new terminal. I will eventually try to replicate the shot, but that is for another day.

I've moved on to doing the original hangars and have found quite the wealth of information. The book most of my information on the hangars comes from this link. The original book was compiled in the 1960s from old newspaper articles and various other primary source documents. It's a bit of a pain to go through it a page at a time, but the information I gathered from it was both quite valuable for the project and for the history of Port Columbus Airport in general. It is definitely worth a look.

Just a very quick update. These are the four hangars that were standing in 1959 when the new terminal opened. The hangar second from the left was added by the US Navy during WWII as the military actually took over the airport during the war. I have a few more things to add, which will hopefully get added tonight, then I can move on to texturing. Attachments:

I finally have the TAT hangar textured. In 1959, I believe that Lane Aviation used the hangar. I have a lone picture form 1949 that shows the front of the hangar and it appears to say "Lane Aviation Group." Attachment DeletedIn the same picture, I discovered that by 1949, the area under the control tower in the original terminal build had been enclosed. I guess I'll have to go back and change that...
