And nearly a month later, I have some updates. I retextured the sides of the North American plant. It just didn't show up that well originally, so I changed it a bit. I also added some windows on the interior sides of the western part of the plant to give some visual cues as to the geometry. I also redid a part of the terminal model thanks to the addition of a new picture (well, not new, but I did use it to remodel the restaurant and a set of stairs on the back, south side of the terminal. I recompiled the models together into a single folder and replaced them in the scenery. Even in the rain with maxed out settings, I managed to get about the same frame rates that I get pretty much everywhere else, so that made me happy. We'll see what happens when I put some details in. I'll get some screen shots up hopefully in the next few days. I can't think of anything that will side track me again for a few months at least, so I will hopefully get done "soon."

Here's hoping! You've made great progress since you started this project - nice work.

There always seems to be something that gets in the way. Whether it is a group that I am a part of needing my time, my work schedule requiring me to get up early the next morning, waiting until everyone in my house is asleep (I try to not work on "me" stuff when they are awake), looking for a better paying job, or just being worn out from chasing three children and a dog around. I really hope to get done before number four comes along in February, or things might really take forever.
Like I said above, I have the four main models done. I do need to do something with the fire department and the other buildings in that corner of the field and add in the little details. I will probably add the details in first and try to get some testing done. While that is going on I will decide what to do with the rest of the buildings. I'm leaning towards modeling the building used by the fire department and using generic buildings for the rest. There aren't any good pictures of them and none are left standing as far as I can tell (other than the fire department building).

One other thing, what is the best way of creating parking lots? I can create an apron easily enough, but that won't look right. Any suggestions?

We are currently using the parking lots in the parking_ss library and in the large parking ss as well. They seem to work well.
Hope this helps,

Some screen shots as promised. Attachment DeletedThe original hangars. Attachment DeletedA horribly executed approach (I made basically no effort to line this one up). This is just to give an overall idea where things are. This is on approach to runway 30 (now completely gone). Attachment DeletedAnd a wide shot of the terminal.

Have re-uploaded vintage charts plus some extras for Port Columbus to my Flickr page plus a selection of pics of the various buildings including four pages from the 1940 Walter Wood Airports book. There may be some new shots there which may be of help even at this stage of the work you have so far created. Link to the page: www.flickr.com/photos/12530375@N08/John

John,
Thanks for the additional uploads. Some of those pictures I have used and a few others I haven't seen yet. One in particular is giving me a minor headache as it looks like I need to revise the terminal model...again. It is interesting seeing the differences between the postcards and actual pictures. The differences usually aren't large, but, when you've stared at the pictures long enough, you can pick up on the differences pretty quickly (I'm sure everyone who has modeled before has had the same thing).
Another thing that is striking about KCMH, is the amount of change from 1955 to 1970 or so. For 1958, I don't have the current Lane Aviation hangars or the north runway to worry about. I believe the Lane hangars went up in the early 1960s along with some other buildings along the north side of the south runway. Some of the late 1960s pictures I've seen have tons of buildings that weren't there in 1958. I would be able to back date the airport pretty easily, but moving it up in time would require modeling who knows how many buildings. At one point, there was even an aviation museum at the airport. I believe it was taken out around 1990 with most of the exhibits going to the Ohio Historical Society.

A 1958 version would be nice, but from a personal point of view a 1955 would be even better. No jets!

I think I can do that. It would actually just require the removal of the new terminal, probably a few taxiways, and the shortening of 9/27. Once I get finished, it would likely take me no more than an hour or so to do (the longest part would be recompiling the folders and placing the models).

This is another "I promise I'm still working on this" post. I have done some retexturing and/or remodeling of the terminal and North American plant. I have also played around with my AFCAD to make it match up better with the terminal. I discovered that I am going to have to create night textures (as much as I was hoping to avoid them) in some areas.
One quick question: Does anyone know where can I find the BGL for the generic parking lot? I found it before, but now I can't seem to find it. Thanks.
