I finally bit the bullet and bought a new computer, a Lenovo H530s that was on sale for a little over $500. I probably would have soldiered on with the old XP machine but my wife was concerned about security- so I did it for her! Its not often that the better half says "go out and buy us a new computer". I'm slowly figuring out the evil Win 8.1 The hardware basics are Intel I5-4450, 8 gig ram, on board graphics (intel 4600) for now. First order of business was to install FS9, followed by the CC library, CC 59/62, CC PNW and CC Hawaii. Lots of problems but eventually I worked it out, mostly operator error. From what I've seen so far, all is well and a big improvement in speed and smoothness over the old machine. Two problems however remain unsolved.
On the start screen of FS9, I get "Scenery.cfg file error Invalid remote scenery path in scenery area.038 click OK to continue" it then starts normally. What does this mean? Or is it even worth worrying about?
A second problem is a large bare patch of sand in the middle of rwy 8 at PHNL. (I'm assuming its a missing or corrupt .bgl file. Where should I look and for what file?
Of course the question is "are they related?"
I suspect someone here has already struggled through this - so any help is appreciated. I unfortunately, know just enough about computers to get into deep trouble.

The error message is telling you that FS9 can't find the scenery as defined in "scenery area.038" in it's scenery folders or in your addon scenery folder. You could ignore it but the error message gets annoying real fast. Open your scenery.cfg file(located in your fs9 folder) with notepad or any other text editor of your choice, search for area.038 and you should get some idea of whats's missing. My area.038 is listed below. Yours may be different. In my file it is listed at the end of the stock sceneries.
[Area.038] Title=Addon Scenery Local=Addon Scenery Layer=91 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Remote=
I don't know if sand in the middle of the runway is related although it could be. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ed. That solved the problem. There was no entry for Local=. I'm still searching for the missing .bgl file for PHNL. It has the airport at a complete stop. Sand(?) completely covers the intersection of 8/26 and 4/22 left and right. Hopefully I'll get a photo up soon.

Hello Hy Win 8.1 is a lot different to XP. My PMDG B-738 for FS9 would only install correctly from safe mode - and while there are 6 or 7 ways of calling up safe mode, none of them are intuitive or easy. I'm also having problems with the file MSCOMCT2.OCX which prevents my FSMetar from working properly. But I'll perservere and so will others and we'll get over this hump in our simming lives.
regards Thomas

Still trying to solve the Honolulu sand pit. I deleted and reinstalled Hawaii 59. Still there. Deleted my original download of Hawaii 59 and the hawaii 59 scenery and texture file in fs9 and started over with a new download and install. The sand is still there I'm running out of ideas. For now I'm restricting my flights to just the outer islands. and overflying PHNL. But eventually I'll have to go in for maintenance and service. Hy

It appears there are specific shapes raised up above the runways. This is often due to another addon scenery. Try inactivating all other addon scenery in the Scenery Library (including the Addon Scenery layer) and try it then.

Thanks Tom, I give that a try this pm. I'm headed over to "Aviators" at KSAC for lunch

Did not work. I unchecked every scenery except Hawaii 59, Cal classic core and landclass, and every other file that would allow it. Taxied into the middle of it with no resistance and suddenly found blue water on both sides. continued

Two more views from the same position, same time. I did not realize I was buried in the sand until I went to the external view. I also found that the tires are about 6-8 inches above the pavement. That I know how to fix. I also opened and compared the Hawaii 59 scenery file from the old machine with the new one and they seem to match perfectly, name to name and size to size. By the way, the internal graphics processor on this chip (I5-4450) continues to pump out 45-50 fps with no sweat. I do suspect it may slow down a bit when I add mesh and AI though.

Hi,
If you are still getting terrain mesh elevation problems after deactivating every single addon scenery layer, then some auto install might have installed a terrain mesh bgl. into your Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery. Also try looking in Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\scenery for any suspicious mesh/elevation bgl.
Have you ever installed anything as far as Hawaiian scenery other than this CalClassic Hawaii scenery?
Do any of the other Hawaiian airports look normal, or are they also having mesh/elevation problems?

Thanks for the ideas Dennis. Other airports seem normal. This was a clean install on a new computer from original MS disks and the only add ons were Cal Classic library, California 59/62/ Pacific NW and Hawaii. My next step is to remove FS 9 in its entirety and start again one add on at a time. I know its something simple staring me in the face but I just can't find it.

The "water" on both sides means you actually went underground. Definitely some elevation problems there - look at that mound of dirt in the distant shot.
We might need to generate another flatten file for that area for you (or with you).

Success at last! I uninstalled FS9 and then re-installed it. So far each of the CC addons has worked perfectly. Thanks all for your help and inspirations. Still don't know what caused the earlier problems. I discovered (again) that when you uninstall FS9, it does not remove your additional aircraft. Nice to know that you do not have to try and reinstall your favorite planes.
