I'm wondering, does anyone fly the Howard? It's one of my favorite aircraft to fly, but the takeoffs are a bit questionable. In a full power takeoff the aircraft can reach 80 kts in a matter of seconds, and be climbing at 140 kts+ soon after. I know Shupe does fantastic work, but how accurate is this? I tried playing with the flight model but I can't get it just right.

Dunno, but I got to see this airplane at La Guardia airport once. Was on a delta airplane headed to Atlanta as usual and looked out the window and there she sat! I said out loud "Holy Sh*t! its the Howard 500!" lady next to me wondered if I had lost my mind.

The Howard 500 has the same engines as the Convair 440 (2x 2,500hp (max t-o) P&W Double Wasp CB-17 or 2x 2,400 hp (max t-o) Double Wasp CB-16, depending on the fuel). The max t-o weight (CB-17 powered) of the Howard is roughly 34,500 lbs, of the Convair is 49,700 lbs. Change to METO power is for both aircraft about the same: at 150-155 kts. Compared to the Convair the Howard is definitely a Formula 1 plane, so I've never been doubting about the accuracy of the Howard's flight model. Thanks ejoiner, and thanks maarten, I didn't realize that the Howard shared the engines with the 440. That does explain a lot. Allen

Don't recall ever seeing any handling notes for this aircraft. V speeds etc. Anybody know if they're published anywhere ?

In the mid 90's when I worked at Tamiami airport in Miami FL there was one of these parked/abandoned in front of our FBO. Apparently it was used to smuggle drugs and would "hide" under the radar signature of a business jet. Clearly it had some speed. Sadly while I was working there it was cut up for scrap.

Mike Hello Mike, If you mean the handling notes for Milton's Howard 500, they have been included in the package (Howard 500.zip) available from the Warbird Library at Sim-Outhouse.com. For the official numbers see the FAA issued Type Certificate www.gjsmith.net/Milton_Shupe/howard500/A1sw.pdfCheers, Maarten Plus video of take off and low pass of Howard 500: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJni942lsbY

Got it sir ! Thank you. I do remember now that I'd seen the notes there, just hadn't been in the file in ages.
