Sorry for the delay... other timezone... The fs9.cfg is NOT in the main installation folder of FS! It's in the "documents and settings" folder or "users" folder as Tom has rightly said. The path is normally sth like that: C:\users\[your username]\appdata\roaming\microsoft\fs9\fs9.cfg Probably the file is invisible (MS security feature), though. However, you can either make all files visible via your folder settings, or you can use 7zip, if you have that small little helper, as a formidable subsitute for the Windows explorer - it 'sees' everything. Open the cfg with notepad. OR an easy other method to reach the appdata folder is to enter the term %appdata% in the main search bar when you click on the big start button. Then delve through the aforementioned subfolders.

I too am running FS9.1 on WIN 10. Have not had your problems but while I can run in full screen mode, I've found that windowed mode runs at 60fps vice 30 fps for full screen. Temps on GPU and processor are 30-40% lower as well. One session in full screen pushed the GPU to over 60 degrees and started setting off overheat alarms. I run with almost all sliders fully advanced and 100% traffic. The system is moderate, a basic i5 at 3.1ghz, upgraded with a fanless Nvidia GT 730 w/ 1 ghz and 16 ghz system memory.

PPS. The FS9.1 patch will report in Help/About that it is running as FS9.0, but this is not true.

Hallo everyone I am a newly joined member butI have had Flight Simulators for some years but the recent windows 10 updates played havoc with them and I trawled the net seeking help, it may be me or my system but all the forums and suggestions did not work , FSx would not re install, FS 2004 installed but would not run I could not control the aircraft in Combat F S Europe ( old version ) etc in desperation I dragged out my old computer with XP O S and managed to reinstall three but in the case of FSx although it worked the computer did not have a good enough spec.
So I trawled the net to see if I could find some help, FSx I finally resolved by purchasing the Stream version, but while looking for answers to FS 2004 ( which I always though was the best ) I came across cal classic and decide to join as it looked as though the answer was here. I followed the above instructions up to item 3 when having downloaded the no-cd-patch I did not know how to go about copying the patch to the file folder. However my original file name was simply Flight Simulator 9 with no file extension, I changed this as recommended to fs9.exe.orig but finished up by getting denied access to anything ! I wondeedr if this was the start of the trouble.
I am going to start again, uninstall and re install but this time I will try doing this with the original version as detailed , but please can you tell, me once the patch is downloaded just how this is copied into the newly named folder ? as my previous efforts were absolutely clueless. Thanks in advance for any answers westmoors

Hi,
Detailed instructions. I'm not sure how to do this in W10, but here are W7 directions.
1. Install FS2004 outside any Program Files folders (use Custom Install choice).
2. To display the file name extensions, open Windows Explorer/My Computer and choose Tools/Folder Options/View tab.
3. Find the line "Hide Extensions for known file types" and uncheck it. Click OK.
4. Find the fs9.exe file in your main FS2004 folder. Right click it and choose Rename.
5. Rename it to fs9.exe.orig
6. Open the no-cd zip file by double clicking it. Inside should be an fs9.exe file.
7. Right click it and choose Copy. WITHOUT CLOSING THIS WINDOW, right click onto your Desktop and choose Paste.
8. Right click this pasted fs9.exe file and choose Cut.
9. Now navigate to your FS2004 folder, right click on it, and choose Paste.
Done!

Perfect, Tom. This info should be a 'must have'! Us 'old timers' take a lot for granted & it's great that we have these 9 simple steps. Also, amzing that FS2004 still rules!!! BTW, I use 'Everything' from www.voidtools.com as a desktop search engine. It will find any file as you type. Super quick.

Hi Tom, well almost but not quite, 10 has significantly different way of getting to things, finding file extensions are by opening File explorer and clicking on the top ribbon View and then on file extensions but in my case there wasn't one ! I did rename the file as instructed but when I got to item 7 this would not work when trying to keep the page open, and clicking on the desktop there was no paste function. , I suspect the installation disks may also at fault, I have installed them several times but to uninstall the computer crashed several times and I had to resort to Wise Program Uninstaller twice as the normal uninstall in the control panel froze and would not work at all so there is something inherently wrong.
I had previously tried to install it in my old computer which has XP , it loads OK but will not open, so I think it's time to quit and admit defeat. thanks for your suggestions but I shall keep an eye open in ncase someone has a similar symptom and found the answer, you never know !

The copy of FS9 that is on XP that will not open could be the problem that is described in the first post in this thread - you need to use the no-cd patch.
For step 7 you can also paste it into any folder that is visible.
Hope this helps,

Hi Tom, I'm not too sure what this forum's aims are, I only signed up to be able to thank you for the first post in this thread. After upgrading from Windows 8.0 to 8.1, my FS2004 stopped working. Reverting to Windows 8.0 didn't help, so I uninstalled FS as useless junk! Since then I've tried almost everything, hunted the web for clues, and eventually resorted to installing DosBox, a DOS emulator, and then installed the 20 year old FS5.1 for DOS. It allows FS to run on the latest incarnation of Windows 10, albeit with horrible graphics quality. I must have typed the right search text into Google, as I found your tip today, followed the 3 easy steps, and voila! I'm flying again! So please accept a great big, sloppy wet kiss, with my gratitude!

I have followed the above instructions best I can, but I need a little more help. I'm not the smartest when it comes to computer lingo so I was already stuck on step 1!
Please don't laugh at my computer illiteracy but can someone be more specific of the steps to take within each of the above steps?
for example: "1. Install FS2004 outside any Program Files folders (use Custom Install choice).".....I have absolutely NO IDEA how to do this. etc etc etc.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, I have the 4 CDs to install MS Flight Sim 2004. When I install all 4 CDs nothing happens when I click on the MS Flight Sim desktop icon except that I need administrator privelages. When I right click and open as an administrator nothing happens. Also when I did an update search I couldn't find that update you all mention.
Please help if you can. EFISchap
