My computer refuses to boot up fully, so I am working in Safe Mode for a few days while I await my new computer's arrival. It will be far beefier than the one I currently use(d) and so it will have no trouble at all running FSX. I am going to spring for the Steam Edition, I do have the boxed set from years back but I have no idea where the disks are stored anymore. This means a ton of downloading, installing and setting up so I can get back to my favorite pastime. I just copied over bought installers for REX and several other programs, so I won't lose those.
My Old Faithful (no more) just went as far as she would go today, was flying in FS9 when the computer suddenly rebooted, and then gave me an error about a failed boot attempt, then just looped through automatic repairs, reboots and more automatic repairs that did not solve a thing. I did a virus scan earlier and came up clean, did all my updates earlier this week, life was happy, until this morning. I hate Windows 10, but I have no choice now. A few days of limping along with Safe Mode and Windows 7, is what I have to look forward to, lol....

Sorry to hear when anyone's computer goes on the fritz.
Windows 10 is not your only choice. They still sell brand new computers that are Win XP and Win 7. My XP computer died (temporarily), and Tom very nicely bought me a new Windows 7 computer. Later on we both figured out that it was just the battery in my XP computer that had gone bad. Replaced it and the computer was as good as new. So now I have a backup computer. It was ordered off of Amazon and the vendor allows you to upgrade or change what you want on it, and offers an extended warranty. It is lightning fast. Go to Amazon and search for "new win 7 desktop" or "new xp desktop" and then look at the reviews and prices. Mine came from Tampa, Florida if I recall correctly.

Just a quickie idea.. Pull the hard drive out of the old PC & put it into a portable 'sleeve' (quite/very inexpensive). Now you will have a spare portable hard drive, with all your stuff on it, (a backup of all your stuff) & you can copy your old FS2004 install to your new PC. Remember to delete the Windows folder from the new portable drive.
Beware of older OS's, as we all know that there will be no security support. FS2004 works 100% in Windows 10, providing it's installed in C:\ & NOT in it's default location, & it's run in XP Compatibility mode & as Admin... It takes longer to type that out than to actually do it.
Best Regards, Robin

Each to his own, of course, but I won't install Windows 10 because of the automatic updating and because I am not prepared to allow Microsoft to dictate what is on my computer. I have tended to find that the risk of using older systems is fairly insignificant providing that one has proper security software and exercise care when browsing the net, for example by using a sandbox. If you have installation discs for earlier versions of Windows one ought to be able to install it on any computer, and keeping drive back-ups is a way of protecting yourself from something going wrong. I think Microsoft are very unlikely to abandon the automatic updating - and of course many people like it - so this situation is not likely to change. A more serious problem would be if new programs will not run on earlier versions of Windows, and that is why I eventually reluctantly abandoned XP, but that will never be a problem with FS9. If two of my main programs were not FS9 and Adobe Photoshop I would move to Linux.

After writing this I did install Windows 10 and it has run FS9 without problems. However, Windows 10 itself has had plenty of problems, partly because of the way Microsoft constantly interferes with it. Recently I did a system restore, was told it had worked properly and then the following day the computer wouldn't boot, with complete reinstallation the only option available. It is probably going to be Windows 7, because support for that has fortunately stopped, but has anybody got FS9 working properly on Linux?

My comments above also now include Windows 11. Not sure as to why Windows 10 gives/gave problems. I've been running a couple of FS2004 installs, as well as P3Dv4.5 on a Windows 11 laptop without any issues at all, actually a lot smoother than on older operating systems. I'm also a believer in using updated operating systems with new hardware. A new'ish computer's hardware is obviously not optimised for older operating systems, which might lack up to date drivers, as well as updates for anti-virus etc.
BTW, I dont feel that Microsoft interfers with Windows 11, apart from regular updates that have never caused any problems or issues. I just believe in having up to date software, with up to date hardware.
Anyhow, whatever works...

Never had any issues with windows 10. Fs9 works great on it. Every new OS makes FS run ‘smoother’…..so it should be running at 4000 fps by now.

Running smoother does not neccessarily increase frame rates at all, That's dependant on RAM, CPU GPU etc. I'm running FS2004 versions off the laptop's SSD, as well as FS2004 & P3Dv4.5 off a 2TB portable drive, with no issues at all. No lag with P3D. Initial scenery loading takes slighly longer, as I have about 400 scenery entries in the library.

What you are talking about is loading time, not smoother running while in the sim. But I agree that frame rate and smooth performance are not directly related, above a certain minimum frame rate.

Loading time of the sim is not an issue, changing scenery is a bit of a wait, as my add-on scenery is on the portable drive. I'm thinking of moving the add-on scenery to the SSD. I'll probably edit the path of the existing scenery.cfg, as redoing the lot will be a mission, as there is about 400 entries from RTMM & Tongass.
