In my new install have reloaded the MAIW Bruntingthorpe 1955 scenery. The instructions say to rename file AP947130.bgl in the EURW scenery to remove the default runway which would otherwise sit under the new scenery and stick out one end. But when you rename this file it removes something like 70 or 80 airfields from the UK. This happened in my old install but at the time I couldn't recall why I had renamed that file.
Is it possible to somehow rename the AP947130.bgl file in a different manner to remove the Bruntingthorpe default runway but not remove any UK airports?

No, you cannot rename it in that manner. It would need to be decompiled, the relevant airport edited by hand, and recompiled. And no decompile program guarantees to keep everything intact in such files.
The more usual way to handle this is to use a program like ADE to remove the runway, But how would depend on the details of how MAIW created their airbase.

John,
I successfully edited that AP and some other UK AP files, to remove entire airports like London City which didn't exist in that era or where the available addon airports like Manchester EGCC completely replace the default, or just to remove any ILS not installed in the classic era. Can't recall exactly but I think it also removed the default flattens which can leave rather huge and ugly plateaux.
I think I had to use newbglanalyze to decompile but the regular bglcomp was OK for recompile. Requires default backup and usual care of course.

Edit: No, sadly it doesn't remove the default airport flatten. Not sure what controls that. Where, like Manchester, the default area is vastly larger than the classic era airport then you need to add your own flatten, or a series of flattens to merge into the surrounding terrain.

Hi,
Yes, I believe another flatten is the only solution in FS2004, unless you want to hand edit the relevant default FL file.

Thank you Tom and Bill for your help and suggestions. Think I'll leave things as they are. I'll only be flying into Bruntingthorpe occasionally so I shall live with the small anomaly.
