In December 1961 an Ilyushin Il-18 and an An-12 flew from Moscow to the Soviet south polar base Mirny in Antarctica. These aircraft did stopovers at Tashkent, Delhi, Rangoon, Djakarta, Darwin, Sidney, Christchurch as well as at polar bases McMurdo and Bunker Hill. They achieved a trip of more than 25'000 km in 44 hours. It was one of numerous international records having then been set by Il-18 aircraft. Bernard
