Hi all, Boeing has announced the end of the 747 program, the last of the original 1970s wide body airliners still in production. With the end of the A340 and A380 programs, this also means that all new airliners will now have 2 engines, so this is the end of the 4 engine airliner. airwaysmag.com/industry/boeing-747-program-comes-to-a-close/

It is NEVER over for all of us flight simmers who can continue flying wide body planes on FSX or P3D or XP 11 for rest of our lives.

Another fact about the end of the 747. The last passenger version order was by the US Air Force for two planes to be used as Air Force Ones. This order was placed in 2017. What makes two engine planes possible is the increase in power and reliability of an engine. Planes had four engines because they needed the power. As Aharon says I will continue flying the four engine planes in a simulator. Not that I'm any good at it but I will continue to fly them.

Time moves on and waits for no man. I'm still enamored with the four engine DC 6 that I first flew in as a youth and also the first 747 that I flew on. Still, my favorite four engine airliner has always been the Boeing 707.

This is a crying shame. The bigger the better. At least the cargo version is going strong, for now.

The cargo version is all that is being produced right now, the passenger version is done. But the end of freighter production is already set, with 16 more to be produced over the next 2-3 years. Since the fuselage plant has already been shut down and the equipment dismantled after producing those 16 components, that will be the end.
