I am trying to change the hull number on a PBY from 702 to 701 and although i've made the change using DXTbmp and PSP it still shows up as 702 in th FS9. It is PBY5AH58.zip in Flightsim.com
Can someone aim me in the right direction on this one please. Trying to learn more about repainting.

Harold,
I'm assuming that you converted your finished PSP back to a Targa in PSP, then opening the Targa file using DXTbmp and then reconverting it to a bmp file before replacing the old bmp file in the texture file with your new bmp file, yes?

In PSP....File-Save as-Truevision Targa (TGA)-Save.
In DXTbmp...Image-Reload After Edit-File-Save as...Extended Bitmap.
Im just guessing at all of this and it didnt work.

Harold, I forgot about the best way to get all of this figured out ...go back to the Main page of CalClassic and click on the Tutorials on the left side. Tom has done an excellent job of explaining how to paint airplanes. That should help you a lot. Marv

Keep in mind that some reg numbers are created as "decals" on a plane, and you need to change the reg number by pressing the ATC Change button in the Select Aircraft menu to change the reg number for ATC.
Hope this helps,

Understood Tom. I'm working on a small fleet of AI aircraft for Buffalo Airways to be used within the Northwest Territories. I'm using more than one of each aircraft so I have to change the tail numbers. Although with the help of Marv I did get this one PBY to work out ok but to tell the truth I'll most likely have a hard time repeating it. lol
Another trick I have to learn is how to reverse a word thats written on some of these planes we see. When I print the name on one side of the plane it comes out backwards on the other side. I tried using the "mirror" effect and the whole side of the plane got reversed instead of just the words. Lots of fun.

Hi,
In PSP you use the Select tool to select the area you want to reverse, then use the Mirror command. The image must be in Millions of Colors for this to work, often.
Many planes are built with the same texture for both sides of certain aircraft parts. These cannot be painted with words on them, since it will indeed be backwards on one side of the part. The vertical tail of the default DC-3 is a prime example.
Hope this helps,

I tried using the "mirror" effect and the whole side of the plane got reversed instead of just the words. If you just want to reverse text in PSP, without picking up other components, I often make a new layer just for the text I want to manipulate. Although text in PSP can be shifted round, if you try to flip or reverse, it does it to the whole layer the text was added to. Make a transparent layer and have that as the active layer when you add the text you want to flip, rotate or mirror. It's also best to do the reverse/flip text first, then apply the ordinary text after. It's quicker than sorting a couple of layers. Another little problem; If you need to slightly tilt text you might find it loses coherence if you just tilt the particular text - letters stagger out of line. I suggest making a completely new transparent image. Add your text to it. Then in the layers menu, select "Merge - Merge visible". That will retain transparency. Then tilt the image and you should see it stays nicely in line. You can then copy and paste, or clone, the manipulated text to the main paint.

Thank you John....I'm saving all these instructions and I hope to be able to do it all myself one of these days. Just spent 6 hours on AFCADS for the NorthWest Territories for Buffalo Airways. I really appreciate your help.
