Confusion Over DC-4 Cargo load

Shalom and greetings all my pals,

I am totally perplexed by pound weight of cargo load of DC-4s and Carvairs in both freeware CalClassics and payware Flight Replicas model bases.

According to real world Buffalo Airways website,  their DC-4 can carry 20,000 pounds of cargo load.

In the payware model base, I tried to take off using both DC-4 and Carvair with 50 percent fuel load using full cargo load of 9,500 lbs as seen on this figure below which failed to climb after shaky take off and crashed on ground.

I was forced to slash cargo load by half from 9500 lbs to 4750 lbs and reduce fuel load from 50 percent to 40 percent which barely got my payware plane into air, climbed very very slowly, and cruised at too slow speed 160 kt.

By contrast,  for years years years I have NO problem flying CalClassics DC-4s and C-54s cruising at 200 kt using 8,200 lbs of cargo load and 50 percent fuel load as seen on the cargo load data beloe

My questions are:  why are both freeware and payware DC-4s/C-54s as well as payware Carvairs have top cargo load of 9,500 lbs for payware addon  and 8,200 lbs for freeware add on when the real world Buffalo Airways say their DC-4 can carry 20,000 lbs in full cargo load??  And why are DC-4s/C-54s/Carvairs in the payware model base cannot go above 160 kt in speed when in real life the maximum should be 220 kts and cruising should be 190 kt???

And why do CalClassics DC-4s have normal climb while the payware counterpart has painful slow climb??

Am I doing something wrong??

By the way, Carvairs in real life can carry 19,000 lbs of cargo load yet I could not climb with 9,000 lbs of cargo load which is set as maximum cargo load for payware add on!!

First of all, the payload listed in our freeware version is the max payload *with full fuel loaded*, not the max payload period. This is much higher than that.

In the 1970 Buffalo DC-4 flight manual, it lists:

Max TO Wt: 73,000 lbs
Max Zero Fuel Wt: 60,700 lbs

In my Resorts DC-4 manual it lists:
Empty Wt: 44,294 lbs.

Therefore the maximum payload possible is Max Zero Fuel Wt. - Empty weight = 60,700 - 44,294 lbs = 16,400 lbs.

In our 1960s DC-4 we are a little more generous:

Empty Wt: 43,200 lbs
Zero Fuel Wt: 61,300 lbs

Which yields a max payload of 18,100 lbs. This is not 20,000 lbs though. You can try this yourself - In the 1960s DC-4 Flight Planner enter 300 NM. The Max Payload value will be 18,100 lbs.

Why you are having performance issues with the payware version is something I can't help with, since I don't own it.

Would that be built in feature in CalClassics DC-4??  If so, I guess I must have installed the CalClassics DC-4 in wrong way even though I had flown it for years years years without problem not knowing there is built in feature for the planner.  What can I do to correct this please in order to incorporate that feature?

To get the Flight Planner you must use the DC-4 Operations Update, available on my DC-4 page. However, this update is harder and more complex to fly than the original JBK flight dynamics, so keep that in mind. The Update does not overwrite your original DC-4 installation though, so they can both be installed at the same time.

Okay  thanks  I must have used CalClassic DC-4 package custom made by a virtual airline which might have explained why it did not have your flight planner.

I am sorry to bother you. I am VERY VERY happy with CalClassics DC-4s/C-54s flying those for years yeas years but I had to buy payware DC-4 package in order to get Carvairs that I always wanted to fly and there is NO decent freeware Carvairs. My apologies if you feel offended if I bought payware DC-4 package for sole purpose of getting Carvairs.

A developer that has made many of the wonderful flight dynamics, contextual history, and realistic operating procedures hosted here has produced a Carvair too. I suggest you check the usual flight simulator sites for the files "jwat98.zip" and "jwat98ud.zip"

These are FS2004 vintage aircraft, but I think you'll enjoy the history and operating tips that should transfer well to your payware.
