Seeing as how Santa Maria airport in the Azores was an important refueling stop in our classic era, I was wondering if anyone would take on backdating the scenery ?

It has been talked about and even looked at, but no one has ever decided to do them.

I have had for some time the excellent payware scenery for Sancta Maria made by Tropical Sim. They seem no longer to be around, but it is available at the link below, and there is a more expensive and full version for the whole of the Azores, which includes Lajes. Anybody who takes on doing a freeware version should be aware that they will receive on this forum very little in the way of interest, appreciation or thanks. secure.simmarket.com/tropicalsim-azores-1.phtml

I've always had huge appreciation for all who do freeware scenery and aircraft and send out a big thanks to them. Definitely an art. If I had the skill, I'd certainly attempt to tackle it myself, but what they say about old dogs and new tricks sadly applies to me.

Ken's probably right but I would be happy given time to do at least the ADE and library object placement and if John and I ended up the only folk to appreciate it that would be fine with me. Having said that Santa Maria hasn't changed that much since 1958 when the main runway was extended. If the modern freeware could be worked on to make the cross runways active again and to exclude the modern part of the terminal then it would be pretty close. I appreciate that's probably not possible for general release. Bill

Ken's statement is quite hard, but unfortunately true reality. I complained myself several times about passivity. Just one thing: military aircraft, environments and traffic might eventually not to be everybody's cup of tea. I don't know, it's just a personal presumption. For my part, I always appreciate what you, Ai and all others are creating. Finally it undoubtedly helps to keep classic era in the air!
Regarding Azores, there will be some screenies showing a more or less backdated Santa Maria Airport. Simply search for "Azores" here.

Hello everyone! This is something I'd forgotten about until I saw this post. I'd sent some files back a few years ago to Tom and a few others, but like PW and some other things, it just went by the wayside. Real life has a way of always jamming things when they seem to be getting together with this hobby. I'm including a link to the files I have, in both zip and 7z formats, for you to download and work with as you wish. Let me know which one/format you prefer. I know for an actual release it's going to be a zip file, but for something like here for testing or beta-distro I can do the other one since it has a higher compression. You guys/gals have my permission to work on these to your hearts content to improve on or change. All I ask is you give me a mention at some point in the readme. Like some of the others I've done (like Acapulco) it's not meant to be 100% historical, but it's definately better than the default. It's also done with almost all default buildings positioned to look like the footprint of the originals where possible. I know it's been a while since I've worked on this because the Sketchup I have no longer works for some reason and I can't get it to work even after reinstalling from scratch. From what I understand, the new people that own it have disabled the ability to use the older versions for anything. Take that with a grain of salt, but you never know. Any future things I would do would probably have to be done with GMAX if I did anything else. Since I'm tied up for time now ... Anyway, here are the files: Scenery in 7z formatScenery in zip formatProject in 7z formatProject in zip formatI finally got things sorted out with FS dot com, but still don't like the new format. It reminds me of social media, which is a "no-go" for me. Still, I may or may not upload more stuff there considering that's the main site for us right now. If you guys want to load up there, that's fine with me. Personally, I'm going to hold off. Whatever PW stuff I do, for example, will more than likely be done through SOH. Let me know if there's anything else I can provide, though I think this was all I had done. There's a nice CS or HJG texture out there for the 707 which is "TAP-classic" with the same titles as the planes used in the 1962 traffic for TAP. I know it's out of the era for when they used that particular airplane, but it looks really nice and was the plane I used to try and lay out the parking initially. The "MATS" corner was done using the C-135, but again I can't remember if it was using an HJG "Frank" repaint or one of the "pseudo" paints for the CS model. Since I have both, I can't remember which one I used for that now. The south ramp area is large enough for trasit fighters or bombers (I think), so if you want to gas up on your way to Torrejon ... You would just have to add those particular spots since I don't think I did those. Enjoy and I hope it's a good start for you guys. Post some screenshots if you guys want. Regards, Jorge Miami, FL

Jorge, many thanks for this well done scenery, expected since a long time! As said by John, Santa Maria was placed in the same famous category like Gander and Shannon. You mention the C-135 MATS. Wasn't it used to land at Lajes? 1962 MATS traffic is scheduled to do stops there, including some C-135.

Hi Jorge,
Thank you so much! For me it's everything looks and works very well in this scenery. Moreover, by coincidence today I had installed Classic Ships found at Avsim, and now this place looks even better.
Regards, Dan

I probably went a little too far in what I said above, but have been considerably cheered by the responses, so that is good. The ships file to which Kludde refers is one I did eight years ago when I bought the payware scenery, and also has ships for CC Lisbon. Most of the credit goes to Mike Stevens, who made the ships. Ken,
Thank you and Mike very much for these Classic Ships packages! I think I found and had insthall them all: New York harbour, Boston, English Channel, Amsterdam, Oslo, Lisbon, Azores, Beirut, Istanbul, Hong Kong and Sydney. Hope that didn't miss any other packages, because them really adds some life to the corresponding harbours.
Regards, Dan

Dan, Many thanks. The separate packages were all done some years ago but that is a complete list as far as I can remember. I often add ships to scenery releases which deal with airfields on coastlines and recent releases with Al Von Pingel include Port Lyautey, Bermuda, Ernest Harmon and Goose Bay, Ken
