Hi all,
Turner Classic Movies will be playing this classic B-36 and B-47 movie on Tuesday, June 30th at 10 pm EDT (7 pm PDT). If you haven't seen it and like big aircraft in action, this one's for you.
They will also be showing the cold war classic Fail Safe on Monday the 29th at 6 pm EDT (3 pm PDT).
Enjoy,

A couple of my all time favorites. If it has airplanes in it any movie is a good one. Sometimes the acting isn't so hot but the airplanes are always the stars. I remember as a child I saw the movie 'Wings'. That is a real classic.
Command Decision, Twelve O'Clock High, and A Guy Named Joe are three more of my favorites.

Cool!
I still remember that deep bass sound coming from a B-36 flying high above Denver...and the B-47s flying low and slow with the small drag chute out behind it prior to landing at nearby Lowry AFB. Wished I had a camera back then. Occasionally a B-36 would land there - it seemed to take up half of the sky!

They were correctly nicknamed "The Aluminum Overcast".

You could hear them 'seems like 30 minutes' before you could see them high overhead landing at Ramey, AFB, Puerto Rico. I too, can remember laying on the beach near Aguadilla, watching and listening for them to come in. I was very lucky to have a nice 10 day TDY Waiting for a engine change (on my KC97) because of a bad 'jug' . Of course, the engine had to come all the way from my home base at Whiteman,AFB in Mo. Those B36 guys had many flying hours, because they almost always flew with 2 crews aboard. I must watch it again tonight. Thanks

Incidentally, there is a SAC museum just outside of Omaha, Nebraska. It has a restored B-36, B-47 & B-52. It also has a B-52 Simulator. If these are of interest to you, it's about 30 minutes south west of Omaha, costs about $10.00, and worth every penny. I spent three hours there last summer, and still felt it would be worth another visit. Also for movie lovers, try " A Gathering of Eagles". An O.K. Rock Hudson movie, but for an airplane enthusiastic like me very worthwhile.

I clearly live in the wrong country! some great movies there. "Gathering of Eagles " was comparable to "12 O'Clock High" insofar as the plot began with a competent and popular commander not making the grade, and a hard-nose replacing him, then hitting crisis-time. Remarkable that Rock Hudson ("Eagles") had an Aussie for his 2 i.c.!

Had not seen Strategic Air Command in many years so watched it tonight and came away with a couple of observations:
When June Alyson flies into Fort Worth, lo and behold, you can see they used the terminal from Tom's KACF scenery as the background (along with an AA CV-240 and four-engined Douglas).
Noted the fairly pronounced positive angle of attack in the KC-97 during the air refueling sequence, like the FS Aviator models assume when simulating a refueling flight profile.
I liked the way that the B-47 takeoff and landing profiles looked so like those one can see using the Bill Holker B-47 with Glenn Duncan's flight dynamics. I'm a huge fan, even if it is a jet.
Also of note, it appears as though the real-life B-36, B-47 and C-97's were all equipped with the squeaky brake gauge ;D

Yes, Chris, it is nice to see how much they followed Flight Sim in 1955. I too watched it, and having seen it before I remembered the plot, but approached it with a greater awe and respect for the aircraft. the aerial sequences were just great and combined with a nice THX rated sound system and the volume "up to 11", gave the feeling the plane was about 1,000 feet overhead. I'm sad I'm too young to have ever seen one fly, but the movie does great justice to the aircraft and the crews that served her.

I was "just going to watch the first B-36 flight", and then ended up watching the whole thing. I did notice ACF too, and thought the same thing - "there's Kris' terminal!". Just great aerial shots throughout.

PS. I was flying FS at a friend's house (jet jockey), and was flying the new 580 to show it off. He was really jazzed about the squeaking brakes, and asked "Hey, can I add that to my planes?" (modern jets). I said "Sure, but have you heard your planes squeak like that?". He suddenly looked crestfallen, realizing he hadn't.
