I wonder...if FSAviator might know about the britannia sound.
He is a fine technical writer and describes complex things well.
He might provide a descriptive bridge for a creative sound mixer.

My memory might be playing tricks but I lived on the approach to Heathrow in the 60's and they did have a deep tone but also a whine. The engine was quite distinctive and you could tell it was a Brit without seeing it. I can also remember seeing 3 of British Eagles on hold at Epsom. Perfectly stacked so it looked as if they were in formation. The sound was quite gentle compared to Darts and jet engines. Even though there were 3 together. I am fairly certain it was a rumble and nothing like the CV580 sounds on the currrent model. The sounds on the model used by CBFS are the nearest but lack the whine.

Hi Simon That makes a lot os sense and the large prop and quiet turbine would mean almost two seperate sounds in parallel. As I mentioned earlir I saw a clip of one taking off and it had the Viscount type Dart sound without the shrillness or prop buzz and the deep prop sound close to the CBFS but as you say that does not have the turbine whine. You are confirming what two years of on off research is pointing to but it need finalising and not having good live experiance of the type despite being 52 years old , I am in no position to judge ;D Thanks Garry

Looks like silent film dubbed over..so that could be anything I have many Viscount clips taking off to the hearty roar of four Pratts or similar. That sounds like a pure Jet. Thanks anyway Garry

A lot of the film in those days was silent.
It make reseach of history so much more difficult......I just don't know sometimes, other times it's more obvious.

It sounds a contradiction when one describes the sound. But it is exactly that a gentle roar and whine. The trouble is I would know it if I heard it, but then is it memory playing tricks. I have the Video Farnborough the glory years maybe it is on there. By the way Garry have you tried Dave Booker?

Hi Simon I have that video nothing really conclusive as it is just short snatches. I have a video of one taxying and it is a gentle whistle and another taxying and there is no turbine sound just prop buzz, so it depends on the equipement recording it I suppose. Dave Booker is a member of the beta team. ATB Garry

Hi Garry when it comes to sounds I suppose its what they are recorded on and of course what they are being played on ! after going through all my tapes and dvd's and searching you-tube e.t.c still haven't found anything that sounds like the Britannia as i can remember them, what sounds do the cbfs use I cannot find them on the classic British files? best regards Edd

Hi Edd It's a bit of a minefield The sounds CBFS use....well this will be the Brit.... is the one on the vid above and can be got I think from FlightSim.com and I believe it's in the VA pack on the New Releases and Support members only section of CBFS.......I think it's called Britsound or something like that......so long now I've had it ;D This is a CBFS team product and we want to get accurate sounds for it but it is proving difficult. Hi Edd, Garry,
The file's name is britsnd.zip. I use it for the Britannia's too. Can't remember where I downloaded it from, but it is still available at FSDome (http://www.fsdome.com/library/sounds/5.htm).
Cheers, Maarten

It shouldn't be on FSDome!!!. ......Thanks Maarten As mentioned that is the sound currently used by CBFS VA and my Brit but is is not quite right and the chap who made it, like me, has never had live experience of the type. This is what we are trying to improve on Garry
