Nothing wrong with shooting an approach to mins...even twice as long as you have plenty of go-juice to make it somewhere where landing is ensured and you stick precisely to the plates.
Of course you need to make sure that there are no "maybe just a little lower" thoughts when you see nothing at the MDA or DH. The missed MUST be the only "pre-programmed" choice.
So far I have done that only once, at Half Moon Bay...ending up finally at SQL San Carlos. I think the MDA for the GPS approach was 700ft and I was solidly in the milk soup at that point....but there was a guy flying in the "pattern" which is the reason I tried the second approach.
Otherwise my rule is if I did not do anything wrong on the first approach and it did not work I am going to the alternate. No need to tempt fate when you fly largely for pleasure and with Angelflight passengers on board I will only do IFR if the destination has a working ILS.
