Back at the drawing board, with plenty of unfinished business lying around. Here I have "pencilled in" some engines and am wondering whether I've got the proportions right. Scale drawings are nice and all but it's got to look right ... Best, Manfred

Hi Manfred,
Quite agree on the scale drawings, they do not always show things correctly. I've had it a couple times with scale drawings, that they are not accurate - in fact, as a modeller I've had instances where I had two different sets to work off, both contradicting the other. Bar actual factory drawings, they will always contain some oddities or inaccuracies.
Three things seem to jump straight out: - I see what you're saying: the engines certainly seem to be a tad shorter on the model than on the real thing. Also, the outer nacelle seems to be more slender to the rear than it currently is on the model. - The window arrangement does not seem to be entirely correct. Under the same angle, a third window is partially visible behind the trailing edge of the wing, while the second window barely clears the trailing edge on the model. The door also seems to be slightly more to the rear on the real thing than it is on the model. - And there seems to be a sort of fairing which connects the leading edge of the horizontal tail surfaces with the fuselage, while the same point is at a straight angle with the fuselage on the model.
Except for that, it is quite stunning! Best wishes on the project! ^_^

Yep I used scale drawings of the Bristol Freighter actually done by Bristol themslves but there were errors..presumably a quick knock up job. After doing the Britannia 310 off of scale drawing I found the doors were too big and every window was in the wrong place. Drawings are a representative of a 3D object in 2D which we use to make a 3D object. Not surprised something gets lost along the way. So like here, I angle the models to the same as a photo and check if the relevant parts line up and take if from there adjusting shape as best I can. Looks great Manfred Garry

Oh boy, it's coming!! To me, all could be fixed by moving the wing forward. That fixes the engine nacelles (they are actually only a little too short, mostly just too far back), the door is now in its correct location, and it puts the correct number of windows behind the wing. Only other thing I see is that from this angle, the nacelles have a constriction right after the cowl flaps, but I assume that will come later. Hope this helps,

Hi Manfred,
this is the Connie I am waiting for all the time. So we are now coming closer to the roots of the Connies’ history. Really good news today. One of these Connies operated by the U.S. Air Force was used as the German Air Force Nr. One, when the German Canceller came to the City of Berlin in the days of the Cold War. In those times it was only allowed for Aircrafts of the Allied Forces and of their flag carriers to go to Berlin via one of the three corridors. And Manfred, we both have seen this majestic aircraft arriving several times at the famous Berlin-Tempelhof Central Airport when coming down close over the fence. Unfortunately this airport is closed since October 2008.
Thank you Manfred for doing also this job for us.
Hans

Hi Hans! Yes, those were the days my friend...
For pictures of those Tempelhof-bound VC-121A's go to Airliners.Net and search for aircraft type Lockheed Constellation and keywords "manteufel" and "749". I never made Manteufel's acquaintance but on more than one occasion we must have stood right next to each other snapping pics of the identical aircraft.

Since our esteemed team leader was the first to head off to the island this year the rest of the team got a head start with the flight dynamics and while not finished yet she is flying quite well already.
I am sure by the time our master polybender is finished with the model we will have a proper flying model as well.
The overall shape seems to be quite close already...the inboard nacelles probably need to be a little more bulbous, curving down a bit more rather than just tapering back.
