Hi all I've been looking through old photos of some DC-3s and came across one of a Provincetown - Boston (Eastern Express) machine with the rear entrance on the right side rather than left. Can't tell from this particular photo if there was also a left one. Anyone know the history of DC-3s with this different configuration? Thanks Warren

Hi,
Many DC-3's were built with right hand entrances (and no, there is not one on the left side).
American Airlines ordered almost all their DC-3's with right hand doors, for example. That's why when they helped develop the CV-240 with Convair the door was on the right side.
Hope this helps,

I had the distinct pleasure of flying (several times) on PBAs DC3s on the short trip back and forth between KBOS and KHYA in the mid-80's. My trips we always boarded LEFT rear (in fact I never noticed any with RHR doors - maybe just not paying attention). Some of those flights were quite scary, they were not the most comfortable in rough weather and it always unnerved me a bit to see oil pouring out of the engine and streaming back along the wing! I have to say though that I am delighted now to have had the opportunity to fly the beautiful DC-3.
