Hi, Sometimes I'm trying to land at an airfield which looks like it ought to have these lights, but which aren't there. I thought I read somewhere that certain types of lights could be turned as you approach by tuning the radios to a particular frequency, but this may have been a dream . Was I dreaming Andy.

Hi Andy;
No, I don't think you are dreaming.
Generaly speaking, this is a common procedure at smaller airfields that do not have a control tower and at airfields that are unattended at night.
By tuning a specific published VHF frequency accompanied by several "clicks" on the Com button on the yoke will activate both Papi and runway lighting remotely.

Yep, that's all true, but no default FS airfield has such function. If you get near a runway and there's no PAPI nor VASI nor whatever else... you'll not get them whatever you try. Maybe there are some add-on airfields with this nice function out there, but nothing default.

Hi, Thanks for the info. No more will I fly round and round switching through all the frequencies, getting totally confused and finally crash landing in the forest Andy.

Sorry Andy... I should have mentioned that is the way it is in real world flying.

Hi, No apologies necessary at all . It's interesting to finally come up to a limit with FS9. Perhaps now a gauge wizard could come up with some PAPI lights in the cockpit you could switch on! Andy.

I recall that back in FS98 somebody produced a scenery add-on for airfields in Newfoundland that had the very feature Andy is talking about. When you were within X-distance, dialing a particular COMM frequency caused the runway lights to come on for a fixed period of time. Don't remember whether PAPI/VASI lights were included though.
I don't know how it worked but I remember using it a number of times and unfortunately those files are long gone.
So it would seem that creating remote airport lighting was possible at one point always provided that these memories are reasonably correct.

Never used it, but seems that in FLY and FLY II the function of lights in the airports tied to frequency in COM radio and number of clicks on the talk button was a default standard there. M$ took a lot from FLY (the progressive taxi pink snake, for one), but not this. Shame.

There are 4 apts contained NOR AP_2.zip that have pilot controlled approach lts. I have no idea how they did it. Possibly you could get in touch with the creators of this scenery and find out. The address in the file is flightsim.no/norway. I hope this helps. Jess
