Hi guys,
I'm hoping someone can help me sort out a problem I'm having downloading files. This just started yesterday. I must have done something wrong but I'm completey bamboozled as to what I've done.
When I click on a file to try to download it, instead of the grey dialogue box asking me whether I want to open the file or save it, the grey box opens for a split second, then disappears and then the file opens automatically in a new window???
I'm using IE in Windows XP.
I seem to remember having this problem a few years ago but can't remember how I fixed it.
Thanks in advance for your help guys.
Bob

When the file disappears, look down in the task bar and see if it shows up there. Sometimes a file will do that. you can click on it in the task bar and it will go back up to your main screen.

Thanks for the replys guys.
1 - Jesse - no, the file does not minimize down to the task bar. 2 - Tom - yes (sometimes), right clicking & "saving as" works - sometimes!
After doing a little playing around, I have found that the problem exists only on some sites???
For example
a) On Flightsim.com - I click on "Download"..."I Accept"..."Save" - and everything works fine
b) On Avsim.com - I click on "Get File" - no option to save - then zip file just opens in new window? - Right click/save as does not work - (But, if I then scroll down to the bottom of the Avsim download page, there is a link to the file. If I right click that link the zip file will then download to my hard drive.) - Also, the window that opens showing the file contents has [example] "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\F1VRYI2O\ard_b717_cbe_mcb[1].zip" [example] in the address bar. No such path exists on my PC!
c) On Projectopensky.com - If I click on "download" The file opens as in above example. If I right click & "save as" it will download fine.
Not sure if that makes any sense to anyone or not but I found it interesting that there are differences between these three different download sites.
I"m sure I must have done something inadvertantly to cause this problem. It only started to happen yesterday.
As always, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi guys, I spent a large part of my weekend trying (in vain) to find what I changed on my system to cause this irritation. But, good news, I was able to eventually correct the problem by using the system restore function on my pc. I chose a restore point from last week before this issue arose and thankfully that worked. Now when I click on a file to select it for download, I get the dialogue box asking if I want to open the file or to save it. Phew! What an annoying little problem, but all's well that ends well. Thanks guys for your suggestions and help. Bob
