Guys --
What's the best way to match a tower view to the position of the tower on the AFCAD?

Usually, when you load an airport from the GoTo Airport menu, it will load the tower position from the AFCAD file. I don't know more than that...

I seen many times where the AFCAD position evidently doesn't match the Scenery. From the Tower view, you can see the tower in the distance.

This is copied from Lee Swordy's AFCAD Help file:
'46. Tower Viewpoint This doesn’t create a visible control tower object, and it has nothing to do with ATC in Flight Simulator. It specifies where the default tower viewpoint of your aircraft will be. You can see your aircraft from the tower view by pressing the ‘S’ key in Flight Simulator. You can put this viewpoint anywhere you want. It can be where the real tower is, or it can be at any other location and elevation. The tower location is shown with a pink circle on the AFCAD map If a tower location is not specified for an airport then FS will place it at some default position near your aircraft starting position. There can be only one tower view at an airport, regardless of how many tower scenery objects the airport may have.'
So if you really want to, you can hand-edit every stock airport in FS to fix them. I don't think it is worth the trouble, myself. I did modify one, to get a good screenshot with sound of a low pass in a Spitfire. What I would really like is to be able to pan round in the default Tower View.

The AFCAD tower position sets the views, this may or may not match the location in the scenery. To get these to match is easy but a little time consuming if you want to do alot of fields. 1) start FS at the field in question and slew to above the scenery tower 2) open the field in AFCAD and synch to aircraft position 3) if tower marker in AFCAD is not in same location as aircraft move tower to aircraft position 4) save your new AFCAD 5) close AFCAD and FS, move new AFCAD file to whatever folder you keep them in 6) restart FS, tower views should now be at tower position

Hi,
In the AFCAD tower properties I think you can also set the elevation, so you are looking out of the windows, etc.

I take the point about having the viewpoint match the visible tower position. I have done it a few times much as Oldpropfan does. My method is to move the default Cessna into the tower "turret" and read the altitude (Ctrl+Z).
I then take off about 3 ft from that figure (I hear 2.8 ft is about right - the altimeter is apparently that far above the wheels).
Then, with AFCAD locked to FS so it shows where the Cessna is, move the tower view to the middle of the red crosshair aircraft marker. Adjust its altitude to height you calculated (Cessna altitude minus 2.8 ft.).
Depending on the tower and terrain you will probably need to fine tune by a little trial and error.
This works nicely in some towers and in other cases, tower view is best avoided due to the graphics. It depends on whether the point is to look out through the tower windows or just get a good view from the tower position. As Oldpropfan says, it's sometimes best to place the view above the roof. I don't do every airport but some it really works well for.

Not really the topic and perhaps known for you all, but talking about tower views: what I sometimes do with 'tower view' just for fun: ;D 1/ In the 'Map' mode, set the tower view close to runway threshold (0 feet, regardless field elevation) and judge your own final approach and landing in 'replay' mode. Just like you were a spotter and it makes good screenshots too! 2/ During cruise, place the tower some miles straight in front of your aircraft and let's say 100 feet above. You will see your plane floating by in mid air with the ground as backdrop, as if in a hoovering helicopter. Pretty cool. cheers, Paul

How do you "open the field in AFCAD" while the sim is running?

He means load the airport into AFCAD as you always do.
You have AFCAD running while using FS. Use FS in Windowed mode or Alt-Tab back and forth. You will see a red cross at your aircraft's FS position in AFCAD, assuming you have FSUIPC installed.
There is only one way (actually two ways, but not important here) to load the airport into AFCAD (like you always do), whether FS is running or not.
Hope this helps,
