Kansas City (KMCI) did not open until 1972. Until then the runway and facilities were the property of TWA for their overhaul base. All commercial traffic was at what is now Wheeler KMKC. It was known as Kansas city Municipal, and was a real bear for jet traffic. I have made my own 1959 version and put all traffic to that airport in my classic age fllght sim. I have also added a Fairfax (KKKC) version, as Kansas City, Kansas Fairfax operated until the mid 60's. Having grown up in Kansas City I spent many hours at old Municipal, and my home was in the flight path of Runway 19. If you would like email me at; pyoung17@kc.rr.com for any pictures or information

I forgot to add the airlines of the fifties serving K.C : TWA, Braniff, Continental, Central, Frontier, Ozark, Slick Cargo, Mid-Continent (Bought out by Braniff in the 50's) , and in the late 50's United did have a few flights. I do remember seeing Delta, but not very often ( might have been a charter).

OK, But just so you know If You have a TWA airplane that you operate out of Kansas City, Then you better have a Naval Reserve fighter in Olathe markings for flying around also in your "hangar". LOL! My dad was a 707 Flight engineer in Kansas City in 1966, and flew out of Olathe, the joke among the mechanics at Olathe was the fighters should have had TWA markings, there were so many reservists there that had full time gigs at TWA. My Dad just missed flying the Connie, and lamented so to me years later when I got to fly right seat in one for a ferry flight.

THE SAC (Save-A-Connie) 1049G is based out of MKC (Wheeler) , and I have watched it take off and land many times (still great). When jets first started landing it was really something seeing a 707 or Convair 880 just clear that south nice girl , landing on rwy 1.

Thanks again for all of the help. I relay like the photos of KMKC, thanks Tom! Just one question please. Here is a top down picture of KMKC it's in black and white and kind of hard to make out. Is the area marked in red a runway?? It looks like one, but I'm not sure. www.vintageatc.com/images/kmkc.jpg

I think it was an old runway from the thirties, but I never saw it used as any thing but a taxiway. The old TWA overhaul hangar was at the bottom right of that drawing. That building also had TWA administration offices in it. The only runways I ever saw used were 1/19 & 3/21. Which are the runways used today, although they both have been lengthened since then.

Looking at the picture there isn't a lot of difference in direction with the main and the runway you highlighted, may be that is why they decided to use it as a taxiway.
