Hi there, Just uploaded at Avsim.com, Flightsim.com and Sim-Outhouse.com: FS2004 Exhaust effects for Jens B. Kristensen's Douglas DC-6 and Canadair C-5 Models (dc6flame.zip), originally designed by Wayne Tudor for the CalClassic Douglas DC-6 and DC-6B by Greg Pepper and Tom Gibson; revised for JBK's Douglas DC-6 (dc6_v10.zip) and Canadair C-5 (c5_v10.zip) by Maarten Brouwer. Not tested for FSX. With special thanks to Wayne and Jens. Cheers, Maarten

I use the dc-6 with the FSX fix and the smoke and flames work just fine. :-)

I don't mean to hijack this thread, maybe this should be a new thread, but the C-5 is one of Jens' that I have missed somehow, until you brought it to my attention. My question is that Jens didn't include a docs folder with this aircraft, so I was wondering, is this a C-4 model adapted to the C-5 or is it a shortened DC-6. I use Ken Mitchell's panel in Jens' DC-6 so I was wondering whether it would work in this aircraft as well?

Hi Dutch there was only one C5 built I believe to evaluate whether or not to use the cb16 or 17 engines instead of the Merlin's and if you use the km panel on Jens DC6 it should work on the C5 rgds Edd

Hi Dutch, Edd,
The C-5 is basically a C-4 (Argonaut if you will) with 2,400 hp (wet) Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp CA-15 engines (yes, indeed the civil version of the R-2800 CA series) instead of the Rolls Royce Merlins and the horizontal and vertical stabilizers of the DC-6. Reason for its development was the need of RCAF's VIP flight for a replacement for one of its three C-54GM North Star aircraft, which was written off following a crash. Since the main difference between the C-54GM and the C-4 was the pressurized fuselage of the latter one plus several other modifications, which made the C-4 more like a 'mini'-DC-6, it was only logical that this final aircraft on the line would be a military VIP variant of the C-4. However, since the Merlin produced a hardly acceptable noise, it was decided to equip this RCAF aircraft with the air-cooled, modern Double Wasp engines which produced less noise and were also more powerful and more reliable than the, qua design, elderly and liquid-cooled Merlins. For logical reasons a civil version of the C-5 was never built, since the DC-6 was there already, so the RCAF bird was a one-off. After its military career the C-5 was sold to a company in California and ferried to Long Beach, but never received an FAA approval. Unfortunately this meant the end of a unique Canadair.
Cheers, Maarten

Thanks Edd and Maarten for your replies. I don't know much about modeling so my main question was whether a shorter fuselage would affect the handling with a different panel. Doesn't sound like it's a problem.

You're right, Dutch. I know from conversations/correspondence with several former DC-6 pilots that the Six was/is a lovely plane to fly. So must the C-5 have been for RCAF pilots, for it was considered the "Creme de la Creme", being the premier VIP aircraft in the RCAF for 15 years, and the crew members had to be accordingly skilled to be invited to fly this beauty.
You won't find any difference in flightsim-flying the DC-6 and the C-5. They are both great.

Hi Edd,
Yes, the DC-6 (and the C5, they are basically the same model) needs an update to bring it (mainly the VC+panel) in line with the DC-4 and the North Star/Argonaut.
I have the updated models ready here at home, including the DC-6 with Hamilton Standard ('Paddle') propellers. All I need is time to make the setup program, and upload it. Maarten has made some nice KLM repaints for it!
Best regards
Jens

Jens, If you heard a very loud bang and felt kind of an earthquake, that was me doing a backflip (ouch....my back). I feel there is some new inspiration here for more DC-6 repaints. Cheers, Maarten
