Hi all For Jesse Just to confirm -- is that an HO train set in your photo? Thanks Warren That's right, Warren. The lead engine is an Athearn followed by two Bachman B units and Bachman A unit. The consist cars are all Wathers Superchief. For a single short train consist I use an Athearn FP45 Santa Fe warbonnet. Jesse

Interesting that the conversation about the future of Flight Simulator has turned to MS's Train Simulator: however, not so odd when you realize they're linked through the same host company and the same guys that made and maintained both, got the sack.
I've been out of touch for awhile, but it looked to me like Flight Sim's future releases were not as firmly established as MSTS which had a new version due for release later this year (finally!!!). Like Flt Sim, MSTS also has a huge international community and even though no new release has been forthcoming since the initial one (back in 2000 was it?) all of us who are train sim nuts as well as flt sim fans, were anxiously awaiting the next version. This has really dashed our hopes and the future for train sim looks pretty grim especially since MS was rather reluctant to take on a version 2 in the first place!
If MS doesn't take up the sim reins again in the forseable future the lineage could end with FS9 & FSX...and MSTS v1. MSTS badly needed up-dating, but we've learned how to work around it's querks and like FS9, have come to appreciate and love its versatility. There is still a lot of things I haven't done or learned how to do in both FS9 ad MSTS, so I for one will have plenty to occupy my time with both sims for several years to come. If that's an example of practical rationalization or enlightened self-interest, so be it. At this age I've learned that "Lemonade out of lemons" seems to be a less painful way to view things anyway ! But, let's hope this situation doesn't mean the end of home simming!!

PS Hello Jesse....long time to chat!

Hi all I had an S guage American Flyer Sante Fe set for a while but no real layout. It mostly sat on the shelf but once in a while I would get it out and play. Fairly smooth for a 50 year old train if I remember correctly but not like the Athearn stuff available today. Seeing Jesse's setup makes me want to start another. I have not tried the train sim. Tom might give up if he had to keep bailing me out of another program. Warren

Planes, trains and automobiles.. where are the latter ? Funny you should mention that... ;D www.flightsimworld.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=115578 That talks about AI vehicles in FS9 (FSX has done its own thing with those). Not much available in our period for road traffic, driveable or AI, perhaps the van in the Lyons Golden Hawaii, some of his 40s cars, a nice classic Jaguar sports car that's been around for a while, and a Volkswagen beetle. Good to see we are managing not to rush around screaming and tearing our hair out about ACES and are happily chatting about other in-period pleasures; but yes, MSTS was due for a new version and struggled towards one, and now it's canned again.

Well I posted earlier I installed MSTS on my PC and loving it, I've been train simming most of the day, I managed to download a few routes and tried them out plus I got 2 new trains as well which work OK.
I downloaded a train by mistake it was for another sim, I didn't realise till I opened the zip file, shame because I liked the look of it.

Isnt a trainsim not uber boring ? (:-)
I mean, the tracks are laid, you can either ahead or back.. no more other options available, not up down, left nor right.
Johan
@john Well, I personally am not upset about the MS decision, we have to wait untill the dust settles, and the economy picks up a little, if it eventually will. Afterall, FS9 is here to stay for me, I have everything I want, so will stay with it for many years to come. Tried FSX, but to let it look like my FS9 I have no frames left anymore. (Dualcore e8750). Not even with the patches.. And besides, read the red text on Tom's homepage.. it explaines it all.

I guess if you have no fascination toward trains, you'll never really get to wanting to simulate them. Personally, my father has worked in the Ferrovie dello Stato ( italian railroads state society) all his life and is now retired, but while he was actively working, his job managed to make me become a train nut ( airplanes nut I became on my own), and having him working there, I managed to learn how to drive the Real Thing as well. I even hoped I would become a driver like him, but life brought me on another track ( ...speaking of trains), so I had to content myself with a simulator. ;D That is to say that yes, I too use TS from time to time, and really hoped to see the V2. If FS11 being frozen really did not make me lose any sleep, the knowing that TS2 went out of the window as well got indeed a reaction out of me. I guess we can always find another non-M$ simulator, of trains as well of airplanes, when the need will become unbearable.

I've been enjoying my newly installed MSTS so far, I have had a couple of problems with some new routes, I managed to get one of them working with some help from a forum just like this, the other I deleted. When I was a lad I used to be a train spotter for a while, I used to go to the sheds with a friend where they were maintained, no one ever told us to leave, we used to go in the cab of the steam engines, it was great fun.

I was train simming in India and was surprised to see this: Aircraft landing as well. Sorry for the noobish question but how can I make the track monitor became transparent like that? Been a while now that I'm trying to understand it with no success whatsoever.

It is part of the latest MSTS Bin file, there is an option to have it transparent if you wish, when you install the bin file it alters the screens you get when you press the 'F' keys.
