Isnt a trainsim not uber boring ? (:-) I mean, the tracks are laid... @john ...Afterall, FS9 is here to stay for me, I have everything I want, so will stay with it for many years to come. Tried FSX, but to let it look like my FS9 I have no frames left anymore. (Dualcore e8750).... Well, I thought the same. I would concede klein boring... (or is it klien?) and it's something I personally get into when the mood takes me, play with trains for a few sessions, go away and come back later. It's not quite as simple as I expected, and in fact you need to control a lot of things from the cabin on a steam loco. The scenery is good - probably because it need not cover the world, just the bits visible from the tracks, and a Hollywood style backdrop will work in a lot of places. I remember on a FS forum years back, someone published a screenie of an airliner that was way advanced on what FS had done til then and asked members to guess the sim. It was Train Sim, which was using FS2000 or so technology at the time many of us were still playing with FS98 or just into 2000. Something perhaps unmentioned, but now the slightly dated program just adds a nice retro feel for me to the whole "old trains" experience. Add me to the list of old souls who remain perfectly content with FS2004, too.

seeing as wee are getting a few MSTS buffs reading and posting on this thread, I went for a surf on far off lands and found this site: www.trainsimchina.com/cgi-bin/lb5000/tsforums-3Yes, its Chinese train sim, you can select English language and I downloaded some fine engines & train sets plus a few routes. One route didn't load but there was one called 'CJ Route 2' a large download but well worth it. The guy who wrote it didn't skimp on scenery, it was great, passed over some fantastic bridges and it seemed to go on for ever, I'm loving it. Col

Well, I took a look...
1. MSTS, a lot of addons, runs great here, but is too old to todays standard to me. Just looks too bad. Altough the physics seems very well done.
2.Trainz.. forget it.
3. Rail Simulator, from the makers of MSTS, Kuju?, looks very attractive, and has a lot of potential.
Anyhow, played a bit with number 3, but its not my thing. Maybe if I spend some more time in it, the steam locs seems to be the most promesing, I like to push buttons and such. Darn, its boring!
I dont know whats the most boring, Ship sim or Rail sim! (hahaha)
Sorry guys, just my 5 euro cents.
What I dont find boring is SH3. With the latest mod, GWX, its a nice game, with a lot of thrill. Same as a night approach in bad weather. Something I cant imagine in a train.
Okay, Ill stop my rant..
please continue gentlemen..

...please continue gentlemen.. I can't go on, you've rained on my parade and dampened my enthusiasm so well! ;D But fair comment, it's a matter of tastes. I just use MSTS for a relaxing change of pace. Interesting link, Col7777, bookmarked for a bit of exploration.

As Johan knows, I used to play SH3 (Silent Hunter) a lot, it is a great sim I must admit, as I got older my reactions slowed down and the Silent Hunter sims were a slower pace that I can cope with. For those of you who don't know, Silent Hunter is a WW2 submarine sim, you go on patrol in different areas and hunt for enemy shipping, you can also get hunted by the enemy navy ships so it's not just a one way thing, I've gone to the deep many times. Back to the rail sim, I am slowly getting in to the way it works, I have had a few problem routes and engines and I'm getting to know how to eliminate the bugs. Last night I downloaded a Chinese train, when it loaded in the sim I couldn't believe what I saw, it was pulling 76 freight wagons, I am not sure if that is the number they do pull but it looked funny, I am going to have to take a few off I think. @johan, I just bought a copy of the Kuju Rail sim off Ebay, I'll give it a try, thanks. Last time I tried a long consist it was one of the default TS ones with 50 ors so wagons and three engines ( been a while). Never got to finish that one, mostly because of some bugged track switches that kept disconnecting wagons while on it, with me having to reconnect them down the line. One of those switches had the utter gall to disconnect every blasted wagon transiting on it even while I was traveling at slow ( human) walk speed. It got me so mad I almost uninstalled TS out of spite.

I know what you mean when things like that happen, I have been working on things that took hours and all of a sudden something happens and it's all gone.
I'm having a problem with Kuju Rail Simulator that I just bought, it takes ages to load and I can't get the engines to run, I've slowly gone through the instructions and even re-installed it but no luck, I must be doing something wrong.

As you can see from the attached photos, it does get a bit worrysome at times. This happened last week in British Columbia, Canada. Also, if you recall, back in the winter of 1952, The City of San Francisco passenger train enroute from Chicago, got stuck at Donner Pass in the High Sierras for two weeks. We had to fly in supplies on a daily basis and air drop it for the crew and passengers. Jesse

First I am kind of sorry of starting this. I was praying that it wouldn't turn into MSTS vs. MSFS thread. (Or Train vs Plane) I knew that several members here, Tom included were railroad buffs, and that it was sad that Train Sim was not getting the upgrade it deserved. Tom infact added one great Alco to the sim.
I believe that Flying & Railroading have their own thrills. Sure it's tough to make a crosswind landing in low vis conditions, but bringing a heavy freight down El Cajon or Snohomish/ Stevens pass has it's own set of thrills trying to keep the train from running away. Plus when you're making approach in a plane, there isn't some idiot in car or truck trying to beat a plane at a grade crossing.

First I am kind of sorry of starting this. I was praying that it wouldn't turn into MSTS vs. MSFS thread... I wouldn't worry. Sure, this is a flight sim site, but it has not turned into a "them and us" firestorm as it might have on some forums. Different viewpoints have been expressed with good humour (Johan's being a great example!). I have enjoyed this thread and I think the response rate shows some interest from the members. For myself, the old program style and the general retro atmosphere of MSTS is part of my taste for retro simming. Some days I prefer whisky, some days beer. Some days, classical music, some days rock. Once in a while MSTS is a pleasant change, but my general favourite most days is retro FS.

I agree with John, I swap moods and go on something different, sometimes I've spent hours on Youtube just for a change.
I love FS and I enjoy tinkering with it as some of you have guessed, I did have rail sim on my old PC but not touched it for years, I recently got in to it again and I'm loving it. As for the retro thing, I used to play submarine sims and there is a band of followers who like to play on the older versions, some even struggle to get versions to play on the latest versions of Windows and managed it, mainly because they love the old sims.
I think we are lucky on this site, we don't have any bickering and bad taste threads, and yes as already mentioned we tend to keep a bit of humour going as well.
I mentioned on one of my above posts I bought Kuju Rail Simulator, well I got it running now, one of the reasons was I needed to upgrade it from a couple of downloads that are available on their main website. I was on it yesterday and the graphics are very good, trees and grass blow in the wind, birds flying, clouds change, people move on the platforms, and also some of the tracks have weeds growing through and are a bit untidy just like real life, it's cheap enough to buy as well.

I also agree. I think, from time to time, most of us need a short rest from FS. I need it to get new ideas and energy for the next project. My favorites are Red Baron 2 3D, SH3 and Il2 46'. Shortly after playing Il2, I get lust to fly with realistic FD from FSAviator ;D

AHA, another Kaleun! great! Well, something is brewing.. a quote like this: "but bringing a heavy freight down El Cajon or Snohomish/ Stevens pass has it's own set of thrills" may think about it. Seeing in my 'review' only flat land, some good hills may make it better.. didnt uninstall yet. :-) Wolfgang, as no other perhaps can feel the Das Boot moments in Sh3 with GWX, I love to play 40ths music with it, its amazing how much addons are available for this sim, albeit a little old. Older sims have something the recent and new ones doesnt have, mostly depth. But still a bit puzzled on the trains.. setting a modest speed, to not to bust them, and looking from the euh... cockpit, its not that trilling, it could be me.. Anyhow, captains (!) go on, untill Tom steps in and enlights us all.. and that would be me especially.. (a big haha) What Wolfgang (a gang of wolfs) said is true, a break now and then is good. I currently sweep constantly between my beloved RFP747 and a Connie in my double installments, Connie to darn slow, RFP so fast... both keeps me busy, both keeps me going to the other one.. AAARRGHH! Anyhow, it still a pleasure to read you conversations.. hats of sir's, youre a nice gang! Johan jesse: I didnt found anything in the sim like your pictures.. lol.

I used to enjoy "Silent Service", speaking of "Wolf Packs" (or was it gangs?) but didn't mention it. We might get a loooong way off the usual forum topics! ;D
