Very interesting. Actually the first powered flight in the British Empire outside the UK. Samuel Franklin Cody flew British Army Aeroplane No 1A at Farnborough 16th October 2008. There's a replica of this one, too: www.codyflyerproject.com/. Cody was an American, and we had to wait until 2nd May 1909 for a British pilot to fly in the UK (John Moore-Brabazon in a Voisin at Sheppey).

Heh, heh, heh. I actually never considered the Home Islands to be the Empire so I never qualified that blanket statement. Probably should have I guess.
