Hey CalClassic fans, I decided on getting a new fancy schmanchy laptop to run my other games. My problem is with FS2004. I have spent alot of time and effort to customize FS2004. Its only Calclassic material. (Well and a few HGJ and DM sim models too) Should or can I port all my files from my old laptop or start anew? Thanks in advance, Drew

If you are talking only classic FS addons, then yes, you can do that. Any fancy payware addons that have utility programs to run or modify them will probably require a reinstallation (of those utility programs).
1. Install FS2004 on the new computer from the original CDs, into a folder with the same name as your old folder. Remember, NOT into any Program Files folder. I use C:\FS\FS2004. 2. Now you have two choices: a. Rename the newly installed folder by adding the name Backup (or similar) to the folder name. b. Delete the newly installed folder. 3. Copy the old folder onto a memory stick or other device or cloud location. 4. Paste it into your new computer into the same location as you installed into in step 1. 5. If you wish, copy and paste the contents of the FS-related folders in your old Users folder into your new computer (same folders). These include the saved Flights, weather, and logbook.
Hope this helps,

Tom, do not forget to download & run the Flight1's Registry Repair Tool to add the copied FS9 to the registry. I have a very modified FS9 install on a portable hard drive that I copy & paste wherever needed.Obviously renaming the folder, & preferably pasting into C:\ Also, for multiple versions of FS2004, BEFORE running the pasted version, rename the FS9.exe to (for example) FS9SE.exe I use teracopy from www.voidtools.com to copy, as it is much faster than the default copy. Regards, Robin

Actually, you do not need to use the repair tool, if you install FS2004 first. That will set the registry key properly.

All good advice. Remember to locate your FS9.cfg file and transfer it after the reinstall. Not needed as FS9 will reinstall it, but if you want your saved flights, settings and what not this will set them up on the new computer.
On my computer its located here:
C:\Users\**Your ID**\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

The one problem with moving your cfg file across is that the wrong video card will be specified. Don't know if that creates problems or not?

Thanks for the help thus far. Wow what a chore to get a new laptop up to speed. I had to go to BestBuy today and get a USB cable to do this. So far Fs2004 is installed. Working on my larger addons now. Wow what a pain this is! Drew

It's all worth it in the end. It's even a bigger chore to reinstall all the CC addons and scenery items individually. Good luck!

This subject is timely for me-- I am also seriously thinking about going to a computer with better graphics (for FS2004). I'll have to get Windows 10 instead of Windows 7, of course. I read on another thread here, from 2015, that the new computer will need DirectX 9 to run FS2004? Is that still true?
Thank you, Kurt

Yes, but DX10 usually includes DX9. If not, AFAIK you can download it separately.

Good Evening,
Thank you for your reply.
If I may ask another question, are you successfully using FS2004 on Windows 10? I read in various places that people have had trouble, but I also read from others that it works fine.
Thank you, Kurt

Well, I just tried installing FS2004 on my wife's laptop (with permission, of course!) and after some struggles, got it running with the FS9.1 and FS9 NoCD Patch tips from California Classics. So I see the answer is that Windows 10 can run FS2004, and I'm good for getting a new computer. This really is my favorite site for getting help!
Best regards, Kurt

Glad you got it up and running. If you follow all the tips on the net (i.e. don't install into any Program Files folder, etc.) most people do get it running successfully.

Today's practice installing in Windows 10, along with the advice you gave Drew on moving the existing files over, should have me in pretty good shape for the real thing.
Thanks! Kurt

I moved Fs9 to my new hotrod laptop and it works like a charm. Better than the FSX migration did. Thanks everyone for the advice and help. Now I can get back to annoying the neighbors with my R2800's Drew
