I have found with the occasional scenery that when you click on the map icon in the cockpit to check navaids etc. that it remains black and then the program shuts down. I'm using FS9.
Does anyone know why this happens and is there a way to rectify the problem.
Thanks John

Does this happen all the time or only with specific sceneries, and does it happen all the time with those sceneries?

Hi Tom No it doesn't happen all the time, just with some specific sceneries. I've put some Canadian sceneries in, but with Edmonton City Centre and Fort Smith they shut down when I try to check the map. And when I try a second or third time with those sceneries it still shuts down. This has happened occasionally with other downloads so I just deleted the scenery. But I would be interested to have some idea as to why this happens. If it is just a quirk of the scenery I'll delete them and see if I can find an alternative scenery for those airports.
Thanks John

Hi,
I don't know, it's never happened to me...

Hi Tom Think I have found the problem. Today I clicked on the default Tulita scenery in the NW Territories and again the program crashed.
So I Googled to see if there was any discussion on this problem. I came across one that said they removed the file AP951150 and that fixed the problem. I found that file in Scenery/World/Eurw/Scenery and renamed the .BGL. Went back to Tulita and everything worked fine with no program crash. Hopefully that has solved the problem. If it reoccurs I'll let you know and go back to first base. If anyone else has had this problem hopefully this may be a fix.
Will be interesting to see if renaming that file causes a problem somewhere else.

If you renamed it to something that doesn’t end in BGL then I assume you will also lose a few other airports in the area, which would be typical. Hopefully you will have no other side effects.

Thanks Tom I guess time will tell when I go looking for an airport. Just out of curiosity where do those AB and AP files actually come from?

They are part of the default scenery.

That's odd. AP951150 contains a set of airports in Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia with associated waypoints, navaids and their transmitter scenery objects. That should obviously not be interfering at all.
But you can expect to be missing these default airports and nav facilities if you fly there with the .bgl removed/deactivated, John:

I did notice St. Johann has no magvar information in the file, but that probably means it defaults to zero (which fits within the other values there).

John,
I wish you luck in finding the cause or a substitute for the NW Territories. It's impossible to think of any reason why these Europe default files should affect that area.
Meantime perhaps an alternative to renaming or disabling default files might be just to uncheck Western Europe in the settings menu whilst flying in Canada?

Thank you everyone for your help and input. I took on board what Tom said about the AP files being part of the default scenery. So I did a check on the number of airports in Western Europe with that AP file disabled and did another check with the file reinstated and found, for example a difference of three in Austria and seven in Italy. So I shan't fiddle with those files again despite what anyone says.
With the Edmonton City Center and Fort Smith scenery there were some unusual AI aircraft files and I think that perhaps because I didn't install those correctly that caused the map crash. I must be honest in that I really didn't understand how those AI files were supposed to be installed. So I completely deleted those files from the scenery and the problem has not arisen since. Edmonton and Fort Smith no longer crash the sim when I open the map.
Once again I have learned something new and it still amazes me how we would manage without this Forum.
