Hello All, Well I eventually took the plunge, and updated from Win 7 to Win 10. The computer guy who did the install said he had FS2004 and FSX running fine in his shop. I’m sure this has been discussed before, but I don’t know how far back I would have to trawl to find any answers. FSX is ok, FS2004 is problematical. The start screen comes up fine. Select a flight, fly now, and a box pops up with a green moving transverse bar, and the message Flight simulator has stopped working, then a further message “A problem stopped the program working correctly” I got into a situation (Don't quite know how) at one time with a black screen, but with the command bar at the top left being visible when the cursor hovering was hovering over it, where all the usual options associated with FS2004 when running normally became visible, and was able to escape the black screen by selecting "Exit" Any ideas?

I assume it is installed outside of any Program Files folder.
Try using Alt Enter to go to Windowed mode and see if that is any better.
Right click your FS2004 icon, choose Properties/Compatibility and try Windows XP or Windows 8. Also try checking Run as Administrator.

Not forgetting you must have the 9.1 update & patch.

The best case scenario with Windows 10 is to run your sim (Any Sim) on a separate HDD/SSD from Windows. If Windows is on C:\ drive, install your sim on any other drive. The reason for this is that Windows 10 doesn't want to let you modify any files on your "Windows" drive. When I had FS9 installed, I also opened the "Properties" tab and set compatibility mode to "XP SP2" and also "Run as Administrator". There may have been some other workarounds, but I can't remember them right now. Personally, I consider Windows 10 the least user friendly version of Windows EVER!

Thanks Tom, tried the "Run in compatibility mode" , but to no avail. However the Alt/Enter path worked fine.

Yes, some computers have problems with full screen mode in Win 10. I hope that running in windowed mode is OK for you.

Until I finally set FS9 out to pasture for good, I had re-installed it on my new system which came with Win10 already installed. A learning curve about having two disk drives in the case, and I finally got FS9 working perfectly. like others said, the trick is to install on the 'other' drive, not the one windows is installed on, and not installing it in Program Files. I hated Win10 when it first came out, now, since its all there is, I have grown to tolerate it well enough to know what I am doing. I does have its good points, grudgingly spoken.... It does the job I am tasking it to do...
I have FSX-Steam in windowed mode, only because I have a second monitor set up with LittleNavMaps on it, but I have adjusted the colors of the various things in Windows to make the border areas less noticeable and more blended with FS. I can live with it...

Windows 10 is just ugghh for me whether FS9 is installed or not. Not my fav OS. Never saw any benefits at all from 7 despite 99.9% saying its so much better.
I'm assuming you applied the no-cd patch?

But ehrm, I have been running FS9 with no problems since installing it under Win10, on the C: drive along with Windows but in its own folder of course. The avoidable showstoppers I ran into are emphasized below. For me too, the only restriction is I cannot start the program in full screen, and therefore have to exit in windowed mode as well as this is saved in the fs9.cfg upon exit. If I forget, I need to kill the fs9 process by means of the Task Manager - right click on taskbar to access it - and use my shortcut to edit fs9.cfg. It should have FULL_SCREEN=0 under [GRAPHICS] to start up windowed. I suppose this is graphics card-related, mine is a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti so based on an NVidia chip. Upon installing, which is now about a year-and-a-half ago (and I hardly ever flew since then! ) I needed to have the FS9.1 update (get it at FlyAway Simulation) and No-CD Patch (get it there as well) to get it to work, and install the DirectX June 2010 redistributable to get it to work properly. The latter can be downloaded from Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 and does not interfere with other DX versions on your system. * I am not using any compatibility mode to run the sim. Perhaps this is of use to anyone. Extensive info on various 'installation under Win10 adventures' is available in the topics Fs9 under win10 and ***IF YOUR FS2004 WILL NOT START UP READ THIS*** . Erik * Please note the link to Microsoft gets changed to something redirecting to the MS home page when I try it myself. Copy and paste it a new browser window if that happens to you too.
