I thought it would be neat to find out what classic type planes we see flying above us. And where we saw them.
I'll start off with a DC-3 that I just saw in United markings this afternoon going south toward the San Fernando Valley and I assume Van Nuys Airport near Los Angeles. There is also a polished metal A-26 Invader with windows, that I see fly in to or out of Van Nuys Airport almost every week. Wonder where he goes?

Thursday 30th October, 14.30 GMT: I suppose I must be a terribly spoiled 56 year old brat. Saw something moving outside the window of my Amsterdam flat: flying at less than 1,000 feet from East to West over the Naval Station approx 2 miles away the beautiful PBY5a Catalina PH-PBY. Just a bit too far to take a piccie. Standing on my balcony I could clearly hear the comforting sound of the two R-1830-92s. ;D Next day, same time: the same Cat again. After passing the Naval Station she flew over the town centre before heading to Schiphol Airport. I think I rightfully call myself a spoiled brat , as Schiphol is the home base of two DC-3s (PH-DDZ and PH-PBA) owned by DDA Classic Airlines. (see also the thread "User pics") The two Daks are regularly flying over Amsterdam. A splendid sight and sound. Cheers, Maarten

I don't think it'd be fair to tell what kinds of "classic" birds fly near me. I lived next to Lancaster Airport (home of the Commemorative Air Force DFW Wing and the Cold War Air Museum) and now under the approach path to Dallas Love Field (home of Frontiers of Flight). Needless to say, I get plenty of "old birds" overhead at my old house and here. Every Saturday during the summer there's at least 1 or 2 T-6s overhead in Lancaster, most weekends an L-39 or two and an L-29, the R4D-6S at least a few weekends a month, and soon I hope to be hearing Mi-24s and Mi-2s overhead. That doesn't include the visits to Frontiers of Flight by various groups, the old freighters that still come in and out of Love on charters, and what I see when I'm over in Fort Worth...

Well I live not far from Manchester EGCC and hardly ever see anything like that, the only old birds I do see are the ones going to collect their pension.

Used to gaze in awe at the Martin Mars' water bombers flying over town a couple of times a year but didn't see either one in the air at all in 2008. No shortage of round engines though, a couple of the local 'airlines' use original DHC-2 Beaver floatplanes from nearby Maple Bay and Nanaimo to fly over to Mainland British Columbia.

The nearest thing to classic aircraft seen flying locally on a regular basis are the BN2A-3 Trislanders which potter their noisy way between Southampton and Alderney, though perhaps "classic" isn't the right word for the dear old Clockwork Tristar. Of course, as Supermarine were a local business, whenever there's a suitable anniversary, we get Spitfires, and sometimes the Battle of Britain Flight turn up (usually Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane, though sometimes they sneak in their Dakota even the Canberra), or the Hawks of the Red Arrows pass over on the way to somewhere else. Two real rarities seen over my back garden in the last few months were a DH Vampire, and a Folland Gnat (another local product, the original mount of the Red Arrows and known to the Indian Air Force as the "Sabre-killer").

Another fire in Southern California. The two Fire Bomber P2V Neptunes are making runs from I assume Fox field in Lancaster to somewhere in Santa Barbara. My position is about in the middle. They seem to be cruising about 6-7000 ft.

With the fire comes the fire bombers doing their heroic work. Today I saw One Neptune, a P-3 Orion, and two Turbo Trackers. I can still see the fires glowing up on the mountain. All the drops were on the other side. I did not see the big DC-10 in my area, but that is not the subject here. Too modern!

I'm not sure if the first A/C qualifies as classic but I saw a Shorts 360 land here at MSP Monday night. It was followed by a Metro 5 min later. As for real classic there are a lot of T-6s around town and occasionaly I see N500HP (Howard 500) fly through. This spring for the 150th anniversary of MN statehood they had a fly by at the Capitol, P-38, 3 B-25s, T-6s, P-40, and I think one of the Trimotors from Anoka County airport.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see it...but one of classmates was down at the airport yesterday (PHNL) and saw a fully restored Super DC-3 come through. He talked to the pilot for a few minutes, but more just saying hi, my friend is not much of a plane person. Not quite sure what he was doing down at the airport either, but I wish it had been me and not him!

I saw a B-25 flying overhead yesterday. Heading north toward Bakersfield. He was pretty high maybe 6-8000'. I hardly heard it with the power way back in criuse and way up there. With my binoculars I coud only tell it was sylver. must have been on a long trip. It was neat to see one up high just like in the 40's.

This past Monday, myself and 2 co-workers delivered a pair of Huey's to KMIA. After delivery we were northbound on FL826 and I noticed an aircraft off in the distance, low, no doubt on final to KOPF. As it got closer, I thought to myself, sure does look like it might be a DC-3, I hope. Sure enough, when we got close enough turned out to be just that. Made my day! (the whole week, in fact). Sure did look majestic.

Lots of Fire Bombing action in town! (Los Angeles). Even the Martin Mars !! www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKBfbomdHCMOne day I drove for miles chasing it just to hear it! But I never got to see it or hear it. But, I did go to Fox Field in Lancaster to see the land based Fire Bombers operating, and there was lots of action there. About five Neptunes, A P-3, and a couple Turbo Trackers, all making rounders to the fire. The DC-10 and 747 were operating somewhere else. Even uploded my first video to U-Tube! www.youtube.com/watch?v=735tW3r5xQgI even saw a strange fire fighting helicoter that had the rotors meshing together! I think it was Russian. Things are still burning as I post this!
