Hey, that's an "AHA" moment for me. Never connected those two... Sounds very logical.
Thanks for the info Mike W, Tom.
Cheers, Jaap

Hi, I just wanted to pass on this tip. You can use your favorite exclude program to exclude smoke from any ship you desire. Choose the exclude "effects", and create your tiny exclude area "box" just as close as you can to the smoke stack of the ship. Remember if you go to far out, you may exclude other things you don't want to, such as the blinking lights on harbor cranes, etc. Give this exclude file a name that has a higher alphabetical priority than the name of your bgl that has the ships in it. In Honolulu, my ships placement bgl is called "phnl_ships.bgl". My smoke exclude file is named "anosmoke_phnl.bgl" Because FS reads any file with an "A" as the first letter in the name, and reads "Z" last, the no smoke exclude as priority over the ships placement bgl, and presto! No smoking ships. Just make sure you give your no smoking exclude bgl a name with a beginning letter that comes before the name of your ships bgl. I tested this out and it works every time. I changed the anosmoke_phnl.bgl to Znosmoke_phnl.bgl and the ships smoked. So I changed the Z back to an A and they suddenly stopped smoking. Now you can have your exclude in the same scenery folder as your ships file is in!

Lovely pic, Jaap...and as I remember, wasn't Grace Lines the "Gra" in "Panagra" ? ATB MikeW W.R Grace company owned both Prudential-Grace Lines and was JV with Pan American on Pan American Grace Airways (Panagra). Prudential Grace went out of business in the very early 80's. I think US Lines picked up most of their routes about the same time USL bought Moore McCormack.

Grace Lines seemed to be one of those former "monopolies" from what I've read. They bought out both the Pacific Coast Steamship Company and Pacific Mail Steamship Company in the early 21st century and merged all operations into itself. I'm not saying I think that it was a "monopoly", but I'm saying it fits the type of company that many people would blame to be a "monopoly". Just my two cents. But I will say, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company was the Pacific equivalent of the White Star and Cunard Lines in size, luxury and popularity. Their ships the "City of Peking" and "City of Tokio" were the second largest in the world behind the "Great Eastern" back in the late 19th century.

I used it to remove smoke in Harry's upcoming Antwerp scenery. Unfortunately Instant Scenery doesn't allow to remove just effects, even it would be perfect to do "surgical" excludes. Therefore I did it with the less selective ExcBuilder. For Antwerp harbour I created seven squares in a temporary AFX Afcad to keep it overseeable. These squares then allowed to create the excludes. Meanwhile I did it the same way for the ships at Long Beach. Just one is still smoking although it shouldn't ... Cheers, Bernard

Hi,
Just a note to let you know, Long Beach is part of the CA59/CA62 scenery package. This is a work in progress and will not be released as a "finished" scenery until I complete work on a few more airports, then Tom and I will release it. So right now it is an incomplete partial scenery release.
I have already moved ships around and re-sized them in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor, so your no smoke bgl will most likely not work for this scenery. I have already created a no-smoke effects bgl for those ships in that harbor I do not want to see smoking.
Hope this helps.

I also did these excludes to see how they work - the first try wasn't succesful. So at least it remains a good exercise! Thanks again, Bernard
