Hi Tom,
I've sent you an email with a dae file and texture to see if you can compile it for FS9. I've been trying to compile it with the FSX SDK tools, and while everything seems to work, after I place the object it doesn't show in the sim. If you can get it to show in FS9 then I'll either have to use those tools or try to figure out whats going wrong.
Thanks,
Al

Hi,
I'll work on improving the tutorial soon, showing how to add new Materials, etc.
I have your dae file and will test out the BGL file tomorrow.
Take care,

Tom, Oh...Tom...I feel so stupid. You mentioned the word "format" earlier. Out of other options, I checked. I accidentally saved my bmp textures as 24-bit, not 8. Now it works. Someone beat me with a simulated stick. Please. Al

Hey, don't feel stupid - I've done much worse, and it's cost me dozens of hours of frustration.
I'm glad to hear that you got it figured out, though. Hopefully we'll be able to work through everyone's problems and get to see some new scenery!
Take care,

I'm still stumped. I've got my collada with textures into my MCX, but I still cannot make a model. I'm outside of VISTA, I've reinstalled MCX, It appears to do something, but no .mdl. Tom converted my first try into a model, with no problem, but to fine tune I have to learn to be on my own. Since Tom was able to convert my sketch into a model, the problem is with me. Probably missing some little item, but sure can't figure what.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the help, looks like I'm not the only one hit by the 24 bit bug. I placed the bgls you sent me using ADEX and this is what happened: Using the FSX bgl the hangar isn't showing for me but the figure that stands by the origin in Sketchup is Using the FS9 bgl the hangar shows up fine but I see I need to make it a little larger. I also had flickering at the floor level but thats probably a texture issue. The FS9 models didn't seem to give me a framerate hit (textures might change that though) so if I can't get this going using the FSX tools at least I have a fallback. When compiling the mdl file I'm assuming you used xtomdl from the SDK for FSX and if so are you using the base SDK or have you updated with sp1 and sp2? I'm running FSX + Accel and I think that may be my problem. I haven't run the updates for the SDK so I'll try that next and see what happens. Thanks again for the help, Al ps - Saw your second note, looks like it placed fine for you in FSX. Must be an Accel + sp2 issue on my end, will let you know if I solve it.

Hi, Well, we're all making some progress, anyway... I am using the SP1A SDK update - there are many bugs in the original SDK on the FSX DVD's. www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24910E66-96B0-4543-9B4A-647B7E28F212&displaylang=enIf you are using Vista or System 7 and getting errors, it's always a good thing to try right clicking on the program file and choosing Run As Administrator. Even though the program might be outside the dreaded Program Files folder (which these OS's put special restrictions on), it may be trying to access files within it. Also, another "gotcha!" is that many of these FS utility programs expect you to be using the period for your decimal separator (instead of a comma, common in Europe and elsewhere). Try changing that in your Windows Regional Settings. Hope this helps,

Hi again,
In MCX at the bottom left of the screen, you will see an Error Log tab. Pasting that information into your message here after attempting an Export might give us more information on what is wrong. There is a little button at the top left that will turn the error log into a text file, which can then be copied and pasted into a message.
Hope this helps,

Al,
I had some floor flickering also. I raised the building 0.001 feet off the ground and that solved it.

Hi Tom,
thanks for all these advices and information, also for the latest tutorial. But please tell me how to add objects like the default tower as mentioned at the end of your tutorial. I simply do not know how to do this. Tahnaks again.

VISTA us, be SURE you check "administrator rights" on compatibility options, it affects it even outside of programs. Use error log on MCX if having a problem making .mdl. Also, my textures on VISTA, MUST use extended .bmp to work. Thanks to Tom's help, I can now get models to work in flight sim.

Hi, Pung - so glad I could help, and am looking forward to your first airport. Kalle, I used the payware program Instant Scenery to add the tower, but any program that can add default library objects can do it (ADE, Rwy12, EZ-Scenery). It is one of the small towers, found in the generic.bgl file. I assume you are using one of these programs to add your Sketchup objects anyway, and whatever you are using should also be able to add that. I just increase the elevation of the tower until it pokes out of the top of my building. BTW, the only way I know to get a working airport beacon on top of the tower is to use SceneGenX or edit the resulting XML file directly, adding the info found in the Effects SDK. Hope this help,
