Oh yeah, one more thing because I just looked at the pic of 99380's panel again - the white marks on the gauges are "witness marks" to be able to confirm that the glass and bezel have not been rotated which would make the arc markings inaccurate and require repair prior to flight. For aircraft that had markings directly on the instrument face (as from the factory in most cases) these weren't required.

What's different between the Barn Door model and the C-131A with cargo door? Hi Tom, the C-131A cargo door is moving upwards. The later to some T-29 added Barn Doors have two wings, moving to the left and right. Here's another example for those barn doors: www.airliners.net/photo/Trans-Fair/Convair-T-29B-(240-27)/1282957/L/A quite tempting repaint candidate as well... @ Jon: Knowing about your soft spot for worn cargo haulers, I assume your drool catcher overflowing again... ;D Cheers, Markus.

Hi,
I just took her for a flight and noticed in the replay of my landing that the airspeed indicator reads "0 knots" throughout the replay. I know that with most aircraft, it's the RPM dial that doesn't function or replay the information from the flight, but you DO get the airspeed on both the panel and the red tool bar (Shift+Z), but with this model it seems to be the other way 'round. RPM's work, but no airspeed in replay...in the panel or FS tool bar. Any ideas why/why not?
On a completely seperate and possibly unrelated issue, I've noticed that my autopilot wants to keep control of the trim knob once I've released "alititude hold"...whether I'm trying to use "my" trim wheel, or the pitch knob on the autopilot itself. I finally had to recycle the autopilot a couple of times to get it to release the trim tabs. Any ideas here? ...or is it just me. I'll check some other planes and get back on this one.
Thanks for a FINE looking bird, guys!
Yours, ;D

Hi, If the AP is ON in any mode, the altitude will be controlled. That involves using the trim tabs. When the ALT HOLD switch is off, altitude (attitude) is controlled by the Pitch Wheels. Manual control of trim is only available with the AP off. I occasionally have to cycle the AP OFF/ON to get it to behave.

. . . Jon: Knowing about your soft spot for worn cargo haulers, I assume your drool catcher overflowing again... ;D . . . . Gee, Markus -- was that you looking over my shoulder? Methinks you're getting to know my "deep, dark secrets" all too well! This cab (the 240) is going to fit very well in my Top-Five Hangar, by the gods!

Just D/L the newest military Convairs. They're great.
I was wondering if a layered paint kit is available or will be made available. I'd like to do repaints of the T-29 / C-131A.
Well done to VBF for this. Many thanks!
Dave

And there are a lot. ;D Currently our paint kits are a little bit “too professional” for users who didn’t learn with them from the bottom up. We have about 7 different paint kits for all the different door configurations with more than hundred layers each. So for public use we must reduce them for more clearness. Please stay tuned! Thank you for your understanding. Hans Hermann

I flew this aircraft in 1971, as a 19 year old first officer under F.A.R. 91 subpart D. At that time, N8404H had had all but the aft 4 across seats removed, and was being used to transport The Wall Street Journal from Ontario, CA (KONT), to Phoenix AZ (KPHX) each weekday night (it was printed in nearby Riverside). We flew unpressurized, mostly VFR, departing at 22:00 Pacific. Our time enroute was around one hour thirty minutes, at 9500' eastbound, and 8500' westbound. We'd get back to Ontario around 02:30 Pacific Time. Then I'd drive back to Los Angeles to attend college classes. I was really burning the candle at both ends, but what a retro experience to be able to share.
Not too many years later, I leveraged this experience by getting a type rating in Convair 580s (CVA 340/CVA 440) on my freshly minted ATP. I did this at Allegheny Airlines (which at the time was getting DC-9s & B-727s and was becoming US Air). They offered me a job, as 727 second officer, if I'd go back to LA and get the Flight Engineer Turbo jet rating. I purchased training from Flying Tiger Airline in 'May '78, but got hired out of that class as a DC-8 S/O.
All of this from around 600 hours of flight time in 04H. Of 20,000 plus hours, in everything from Ercoupes to Boeing 747-200s this is what really stands out in my memories.
Pretty cool.
P.S. Within reason, if you have any questions about operations of this aircraft, and assuming I still remember, I'll be glad to respond.

Hi, guys, just recently got this amazing Convair 240 package and am flying it in FSX:SE. You guys did an outstanding job on this airplane, thank you very much for it! I'm flying the CC/VBF Convair 240 from cv240vbfca18_basepack_010.zip, with Ethiopian Air Lines livery from cv240vbfca18_eth_et-t-22_01.zip, using the KMCC panel from cv-240_ca18.zip. I'm having three issues: 1. The dreaded "nasty prop disc" that gets hidden by clouds in the background 30 miles away. The Ethiopian Air Lines livery didn't come with a replacement blurry prop texture for FSX, and I can't find one for a 3-bladed prop with yellow tips. I rummaged through the FSX_Propdisks folder in the lockheed749.zip Constellation, but there is only a plain gray one and a couple of red/blue-tipped ones. Anybody know where a 3-bladed gray-with-yellow-tips replacement prop disc for FSX might be hiding? 2. I have not found any way to control prop RPM. Instead of the usual prop controls on stalks, there are two little black knobs in the center of the throttle quadrant labeled "prop switch" on mouseover, but clicking them has no effect on RPM- it just makes a clicketty-clack sound and a light turns on, indicating... that my popcorn is done? In other words, I have no idea what the light means, or what those strange black switches are supposed to be doing. Not only are there no prop stalks/levers as one would expect in any constant-speed prop aircraft, but RPM varies directly with throttle/manifold pressure, indicating that the constant-speed prop governors aren't working. Also, the usual FSX keyboard prop controls have no effect at all- hitting Ctrl+F2 to reduce RPM does absolutely nothing, and same for Ctrl+F3 to increase RPM. Can someone please point me in some direction that will result in gaining control over my RPM? 3. I can't tune any of the radios. The ATC window "auto-tunes" Com1 for me as required, but I can't tune the Nav radios at all. I've tried mouse-wheeling up and down on both the knobs and the frequency windows, right- left- and middle-clicking knobs and windows... nothing works. I'm flying this in North Africa and the Middle East, and really need my NDB (ADF) and VORs to be tuneable, because one sand dune looks pretty much like the next sand dune... VFR navigation using landmarks just isn't feasible. As info, I've read the manuals AND the Martin/Convair tutorials, but they're long on engine dissertations and mute on how to control stuff that isn't at all obvious. Just to show why I need yellow tipped props, here is my current trip- FL210 halfway between Cairo and Jeddah: So beautiful. Thanks in advance for any help taming this magnificent airplane!

Hi,
I'm afraid I don't have many answers for you - the panel works fine in FSX SP2 for me. I don't know of a yellow tipped prop disk for FSX, but you could replace the static prop texture with a plain one so they match, at least.
You are the first to report using the plane in FSX SE, so perhaps something has changed?
Sorry,

The panel also works in FSX:SE for a friend of mine on another forum, but I just can't make it work for me. Here's a short video showing exactly what problems I'm having:

Hi,
I notice that you changed out the autopilot. Have you changed any other gauges? Have you tried this with a completely default panel?

Hi, I notice that you changed out the autopilot. Have you changed any other gauges? Have you tried this with a completely default panel? At the time I posted my original question, I had the "default" KMCC panel for this model. Later, I changed the AP because I couldn't get the one that came in the KMCC panel to work- it wouldn't track the heading bug on the DG and it wouldn't hold altitude. The B737-400 one I put in works great, and additionally offers alt-preselect, VS control and full ILS tracking. At the time of my last post (the one with the video), only the AP had been changed. Last night, I finally gave up trying to tune the DC6B radios from the KMCC panel and changed out the entire radio stack to a B737-400 setup matching the new autopilot, and now my radios are tunable. Yay! I traced the prop governor (RPM control) failure to a modified air file that a friend "tweaked" for me to try to cure the adverse taxi and pitch controllability behaviors of this model in FSX. When I reverted back to the air file that came in the download, my RPM switches started working again... so now, as long as I don't taxi or turn off the autopilot I can manage the airplane. All that remains for me to do to fully enjoy this airplane is to somehow make the nosewheel steering work properly and predictably and then get some pitch control balance between the over-sensitive pitch trim and the insufficient elevator authority... without turning off my prop governors again. I'm working on the pitch issues in aircraft.cfg and not planning to touch the air file again since I need RPM control. I have no idea how I will fix the nosewheel steering issues, but I'll find a way. Thanks again for your responses and concern. I'll eventually get this thing right, with a little help from my friends.
