Hi again, With Dave McQueen's help, I've finished the next airport, Oakland (KOAK). Here is the 1962 South Field terminal, which has been slightly revamped and better detail objects added. The AC Transit bus will probably be leaving soon: And here is the older North Field terminal, used for all traffic in 1959, but only for non-skeds in 1962. In order from left to right is the administration building which is joined to the domestic terminal, the restaurant, and the international terminal (which used to be the original hotel): The same terminal from the other side: Hangers 3, 2, and 1, with the GA FBO in between and the old terminal beyond: Hangars 4 and 5, which were used by Transocean and its subsidiary AEMCO (Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance Co.) in this 1959 shot. The pre-1962 tower is attached to Hangar 5. Hangar 6 is beyond: Hangar 5 has an old hotel alongside it on the street side, which by 1959 was being used as the Transocean/AEMCO offices: Hangars 7 and 8 are unusual designs - 4 T hangars back to back and side to side. Hangar 7 was used by Lockheed Air Services to service many of the non-sked airlines, and Hangar 8 was used by Bayaire Avionics and Transair (sign on air side of hangar). That's an ex-American ONA DC-7 on the right, and a USOA DC-6B on the left: There used to be a Naval Air Station at Oakland (closed in the late 1950's) - see the barracks in the picture above?, and Hangar 9 was theirs. Now being used in 1962 by SFO Airways as their helicopter maintenance base, the Navy wings are still proudly displayed even today: As is true at many airports, KOAK had its share of stored aircraft. Here in 1962 you see the stored Transocean Stratocruisers (TALOA had suspended operations in 1960), and the old Short Solent flying boats that were going to fly for South Pacific Airlines until they leased Super Connies instead. One is now in the Oakland Aviation Museum: I hope you enjoyed your tour of Oakland's airport - one of the more interesting in the state due to all of the little-known charter and non-sked airlines located here.

Hi,
No, I have no plans on revisting the PacNW scenery for now, sorry.
LAX will be pretty much unchanged, except for the oilspots and the new ramp equipment, AFAIK.

Hi again, Well, I have continued working on this project, although I haven't posted any pictures for a while. This post will show you Santa Monica (KSMO), where Douglas built our propliners. First a view from the air side of the Douglas plant in 1957, with all the new propliners out on the line being finished up and flight tested: And a view from the street side of the headquarters entrance, and beyond the employees leaving work from their entrances: and finally a view from 1962 of the Pacific Airmotive hangar on the other side of the airport with an FAA CV-580 being tested (they had facilities in Santa Monica and Burbank) and the Lear-Siegler FBO hangar at the far right. They also had a large factory building to the left of this picture: I haven't added many ramp details, etc. since this is close to LAX and the frame rates are low enough already. We'll look at another (somewhat larger) airport in my next post.

OK, here's the next airport. I couldn't have completed this one without Dave McQueen's help - thanks so much! He provided the pictures of the buildings and SPAL Solent, and the Rick Helicopter textures too. First, a 1962 pic of the only modification to the terminal building, the UAL circular terminal finger for their new jets. I call it the "Jetarama" terminal, although that was really the name of a traveling show to introduce the public to the new UAL jets. Just beyond that is the new cargo area (before this they parked at the old terminal area). In the background you can see the American hangar, along with the new (1958) UAL "jet hangar", well known due to its cantilever design (the white "wings" supporting the building): Speaking of the old terminal, here it is, along with the Pacific and Western hangars. TWA has moved to its new hangar. Parked at the old terminal is a Golden Gate Beech 18, ready to depart for Travis AFB. A Rick helicopter is parked next to its hangar (it's an AI heli): And speaking of the TWA hangar, here is the new one, just opened in 1962. In the background is the Hilton hotel, also recently opened: Next we have the very large UAL maintenance facility. It was the major overhaul center for United: And finally we have the area by the old seaplane base. The Coast Guard and Pan American has facilities here. Note the old South Pacific Solent flying boat stored here for many years, and the fuel farm beyond. The tower is the old SFO seaplane tower, and is used as a PAA ramp tower these days: Well, that concludes our tour of my recently completed airports. I only have a few more to go but Mike has decided to improve a couple as well, so it will be a few months before it is released. Take care,
